So who out there is a good old-fashioned analog phone lineman? We have incoming phone lines at the makerspace, and supposedly have a working line with number, which I believe at one time worked. Then someone thought that wire was Network and not phone, and it got damaged, and we're trying to figure out how to get that live again. So here's what we're looking at with the incoming punchblock, and here's a new toy we got to help.I am not a phone guy, so I need some direction here.

@Ricardus I can't help you, but as tangent, if you have extra phone lines you should set up a modem bank.

@toroidalcore I am sure the people here could be talked into it. But I think we're only paying for one at the moment.

@Ricardus With the buttset check for your dial tone on each on of these bolts circled in red. It looks like Tip and Ring are going across horizontal down the DMARC. Also on the block on the left might there be bridging clips missing? (Circled in yellow) Check for dialtone where I circled in red there on that block.

@junkman So some pair of contacts show 50 volts, and when you hook the test set to them you get what sounds like a slightly buzzy dead line, which after a bit turns to the weird reorder signal (the different sounding busy signal). But I haven't tested all of them yet. I will, and I'll test the other thing you mentioned also.

@Ricardus >So some pair of contacts show 50 voltsThey might be ground start lines. Or maybe your phonco doesn't kill battery voltage for out of service lines.

@Ricardus that thing with the nuts on it is the telephone company's DMARC. It looks like there are 18 pairs there. Check them all for dial tone and if you find dialtone call your cellphone to see if its your numberThe best bet would be to have them come out and tag your pair. There might be other customers on there in the building so I wouldn't mess around to much there. That block is their property and responsibility. Let them locate/tag your line would be the "correct" way.

@junkman We have the whole building , so we can't mess anyone's shit up but our own. I'll do more investigating tonight and tomorrow.

@Ricardus If that DMARC isn't split to any other buildings, and you don't have any other lines coming in for internet etc, you could pull everything off and just go down the lugs. Tag the pairs as you take them off so you can troubleshoot them after (or just go pair by pair).

@Ricardus You can always hit me up about it, although it's been a few years. Generally we just had them put tone on it from the CO.

@Capheind The CO was not super helpful when they called a few months ago. But we'll get it fixed. I'll keep you in the loop. Thanks.
