πŸƒ 🚴 🏊 Wondering if there's enough people interested in a fitness-tracking Fediverse instance to explore setting one up?(reason being that Strava is £££ and centralised, and also non-runners/cyclists/swimmers might get annoyed with daily spamming of the regular timeline...)

@dajb@social.coop I had this idea at some point. The only problem is privacy in all of this. Fitness data is very personal.

@potato_lisper For sure, but people can choose what to post.I guess Strava gives you the option of not including GPS data within X metres of a specific location (e.g. your house) which is pretty useful...

@dajb @potato_lisper #Strava blocks API access if it finds apps to be competitive with their app.Example is Segment Challenge, an #Elixir app that demonstrates the flexibility of applying Domain Driven Design (DDD). Website was shut down by Strave revoking API access. But the project could be a basis for a #Fediverse app that works with other fitness-tracking devices, more open ones at that.https://github.com/slashdotdash/segment-challengePS. There's no License, so I just created an issue to ask about that.

@dajb @potato_lisper As for #privacy..- People should be in full control of what they share- They might share first to their Circle or Club. A group of friends or local sports club- Clubs might share generalized non-PII metrics- Then there are public Challenges. "The London Marathon", "Climb the Mont Blanc", "My town's yearly local sports event" where it is perfectly fine if they are public, and you can say "I participated in the Nijmegen 4-day walk and improved my last year's record"

@dajb @potato_lisper Instead of #Strava the software might be facilitating open technologies.I have a bunch of example projects on the awesome humane tech curated list I maintain, like #GadgetBridge, #FitoTrack, #OpenTracks and #GoldenCheetahhttps://github.com/humanetech-community/awesome-humane-tech

@humanetech @dajb @potato_lisper actually there is a fork of #OpenTracks (incl. webpage) with social features.I guess it is used by a small cycling group in the Czech Repulic. But the code was never released.Responsible person: https://github.com/vsevjednom-czSome hints for the code https://github.com/OpenTracksApp/OpenTracks/issues/1079https://github.com/OpenTracksApp/OpenTracks/discussions/1308

@pixelfed If you'd like to help me test this out, DM me!I'll need to know:1. What kind of exercise you usually do (to try and get a range)2. Whether you have prior experience of Pixelfed (again, to get a spread of experience)3. Why you'd like an accountπŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚
