@realcaseyrollins weren't you saying that gab.com is part of the 'verse? I recall reading there platfomr was based on #mastodon but I can't seem to follow a @gab.com account from any of my instances (I know it's called out as blocked on my primary https://libranet.de/friendica ) but I don't think anything here or any of my other alts are speicifically blocking. have they turned into @truthsocial.com where they have set up their modified instance as a walled garden now?

I don't care if the entire world screams about censorship. It's not censor, but rather censure, and they're more than deserving of it.

@fuat2mb @RL_Dane @realcaseyrollins From what I recall, gab tried federation, people claimed it was causing trouble of some sort, it was blocked by numerous instances, and it left. And is now thriving all on its own.

I try to filter out what I don’t like and read what I do. That’s how I view free speech now days on the internet. Also, the biggest problem I have with the censor stuff is how they define what is free speech and what isn’t. Like, who are you to judge.

There is wiggle room to ban certain common offenses in an absolute freedom of speech, but that is mainly by platforms and their moderators. It’s force moderation is no law and should stay that way. But when you try to create rules for censorship you end up defining what is allowed by that specific platform, which hinders peoples freedom of speech. It’s best imo, to treats free speech as a light switch, it’s on or it’s off. Infractions are reported and handled case by case. When it comes to political thoughts or subjects it’s prob better to just let it be and let the users block out what they don’t want. Otherwise you end up suppressing someone’s else’s beliefs.

Whether that is correct and necessary or egregious depends on how severe the suppression, how extreme the viewpoint being suppressed, and who you ask.
