Are the forthcoming price hikes (80%+) for electricity (in the UK) going to kill the electric car market?

@fitheach petrol refining also uses a lot of electricity, so price at the pump will also go up.Probably only a minor negative for EVs

@RandomDamage Currently, the price of fuel is going down. The 80% hike in electricity pricing is only the first stage, further increase coming in April 2023.

@fitheach Not sure; it's interesting seeing that petrol/diesel prices have gone back down a bit. It'll also be interesting to see how many of the charge-time restrictions they trigger on the newer chargers.

@penguin42 As I understand it, many (all?) of the public EV charging stations can have their pricing changed remotely. Ones I've seen, locally, were priced at 30p per kWh. That is way below the consumer price of 52p per kWh.

@fitheach I'm assuming they may be changing it dynamically on the load on the grid to get better pricing. There was a home tariff that @wyliecoyoteuk was on that did something similar, maybe that will make a comeback; or maybe car people will just use the cheap mid-nightly rates.

@penguin42 Their input pricing will be cheaper, for sure. However, they will increase their pricing to consumers.@wyliecoyoteuk

@fitheach the efficiency bump from an electric transmission is huge, and the UK is the perfect size for EVs. Worst case it might shift some demand to hybrids,.More likely to cause an increase in demand for solar if the local laws there allow for it. Doubling the price of electricity does nice things to the payback time of solar.

@fitheach @penguin42 The 52p rate doesn't come in until October. They probably buy in advance as well, which is how fixed tariffs work.My current tariff is 35p during the day but 7.5 p between 00:30 and 4:30. Fixed until August 2023. Specially for EV owners. There are even better rates for some makes of EVs on remotely controllable chargers.

@wyliecoyoteuk @fitheach Ethereum (a different blockchain) is moving to a much lower energy consumption system in a week ('proof of stake')
