Interesting study that finds people who oppose scientific consensus are generally less knowledgeable on a given topic, and apparently unaware of their ignorance, and overconfident in themselves. It’s basically quantifying the Dunning-Kruger phenomenon in novel ways. I personally believe there is a common misunderstanding of the scientific method, what theories are, and what “research” is. Of late, it seems like there’s also a concerted political movement that makes going against scientific consensus something of a defining characteristic of a party, at least in the US. Hopefully some day we can get to a point where science isn’t partisan. https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.abo0038

Wait until the Republicans start focusing on how many published papers are bullshit observations about useless experiments and will never be replicated. 😣

@jerry It would help if observational studies with results extrapolated decades out with an extremely high margin of error and purported exponential growth weren't classified as "settled #science"https://extinctionclock.org/

@jerry Also, all participants from studies 1, 2, 3, and 5 in the link you gave were recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk, Facebook, and Instagram ads. That selection bias is well worth taking into consideration before giving the study you linked credence or reading any further.

I think it plays out like this:Scientists are wrong all the time. They change their mind and contradict each other continuously. That means scientists are just making guesses and then develop a deep faith in their own theory. Scientists are also super sketch, basically renting out their opinions to governments and companies who only want to accomplish $EvilAgendaThis $issue seems super straight forward to me, therefore my guess - I mean theory - is as valid as any scientist’s. Scientists will just change their minds next week anyhow. And besides, I saw a video of a doctor saying the EXACT SAME THING, supporting my theory. That can’t be coincidence. Scientists are dumb sellouts. So yes,The earth is flatSpace is fakeAnthropogenic climate change is a fraudMasks do nothingThe earth is 6000 years oldQ is not a foreign psyop

@jerry Most of what people call facts are educated opinions based on research, aka science papers. Just like many times in history research expands and changes or reconfirms. If someone has to cancel others opinions , troll them, or start calling people deniers or other names be suspicious. Facts ejoy and stand up to scrutiny and alternate theories and either prove out or they dont.

@jerry I agree with some of your points but others I think are unsettled.Qanon, I think is fake myself and is more of a controlled opposition tool that is used to drive a narrative for one political party or the other. Both parties use it to rally there supporters from opposite sides of the argument.

@TurdFerguson I think I mostly agree, but I would say it a bit differently: scientific theories reliably align with observations and can also be used to make accurate predictions. But they are often incomplete and replaced by a better theory that is even more accurate in its predictions. It’s like when we learn trig based physics early in school - that explains the physical world pretty well. Then we learn calc based physics later, and it is even more useful. But they we run into limits, like the discontinuity between standard physics and quantum physics. We have theories that explain both, but they don’t explain each other. Some day, that will get solved and we’ll see many people saying “SEE! THE PHYSICISTS WERENT SO SMART AFTER ALL! THIS MEANS THE MOON MUST BE FAKE!!1”Where it really breaks down is with trying to describe behaviors. I have a feeling this is where a lot of consternation comes in - humans (and other animals) don’t follow “laws of behavior”, and so any attempt to quantify or explain behavior is met with “well, that’s not how I think”, even if the model/theory explains behavior of most people most of the time pretty well. There are extreme amounts of uncertainty. And why, I think, there’s a ton of similarity between modeling behaviors and modeling weather patterns

@jerry 2 of ?Climate change is unsettled imho, while I believe that humans have an effect it is unclear at this time how much of an effect we contribute. Many other natural pollutants are contributing to this such a volcanoes, methane release frome oceans, etc. Having said all that I do think we should take care of the earth, it's are only home after all. I think nuclear is the best option, as wind and solar cost more than we ever get out of them.

@jerry Micheal Moore did a documentary on renewables and talks about the costs associated. Also keep in mind that the vast majority of scientists that get grants are ones that are not unbiased but want to reaffirm what the conventional wisdom says is happening. To add to that what happens to a scientist who thinks climate change isn't happening he is blacklisted or shunned, I'm nor saying you have to believe him but firing them and canceling him goes against the process

@jerry interesting. So weather prediction models, I think there are 5ish main ones (it's been a while) have never been corrected and the R has been used to get them inline. Each time they are off the explain away what the differences are without providing any hard answers as to why they were off and just say we adjusted it. I guess more over none of the big predictions that the main players have said will happen ever came true.

@jerry The media is always trying to gaslight us too which makes me suspicious 🤔One last thing. I enjoy having friends that think differently than I do and have different beliefs, so here's to you friend. https://youtu.be/RQRqr9_jw5IHere is a show from when I was a kid

@TurdFerguson I am old enough to have learned about the coming ice age when I was in school. Also, duck and cover drills. /oldI value different opinions, too. It’s how we move forward.
