I used to do this, until I didn't, but now I am doing it again.Whenever I felt like shit at work I applied for other jobs and did the interviews. This was a zero commitment type of an endeavor since I didn't even want those jobs in the first place.I did so because I wanted to brush up my interviewing skills for jobs I actually wanted, as well as to feel out what is currently in demand in the market. This way getting to work for my favourites is going to be much easier! And well, if the job I applied for turned out to be a much better deal than I initially expected, well, I was in luck.Yet... I didn't have any idea as for how much did the entire process degrade.I applied at all easily accessible workspaces where my skills would either be in incredibly high demand, or would be a very valuable asset. But most of them demanded some insane stuff, even if they came up to me, called for me, had an internal reference, or if I decided to downgrade a bit less 'prestigious' company. Psychological screenings, ten weeks long interviews with projects, and other various bullshit for which a sane person has zero tolerance for. It's amusing when for the first time you walk out when a hiring dude says something along the "if you don't like it you know where's the door" type of a thing, but it gets tiring quickly. My tolerance for bullshit is depleting fast, and I find myself more doompilled as time passes by, if I have to go through squid games from an advantageous position without any skin in the game, I dread what degreelets and new grads have to go through.

@dieulast WTF kind of companies are those? I've never heard of 10 week long interviews, hiring managers are usually desperate to wrap things up fast.

@PunishedD That one specific case was an agency which had a peculiar issue of having its head stuck far up its arse. The assesment phase was overly drawn out and the necessary people who made the hiring decisions were absent so they padded the rounds out with more interviews. I bailed out early but I listened the horror stories of peeps who were desperate enough to go through the entire process.

@HenrynFren lol, implying they even get past the hr. That might actually be a blessing in disguise, since that way they have less time to waste and no looming threat of college debt is above 'em. I see it as a filter for the desperate, hungry worker works the hardest, after all.

@HenrynFren Usually, yes. However it depends on the scale of a company and their priorities. Even with a direct inside reference and a recommendation all it means is that you skip a phase or two and you're looked upon way more favourably, which is still a significant boost.I did this solely to prepare myself so that when the time comes I'll be ready for places I actually want to be at, this was merely a training ground, I still have my good cushy job, lol. Also, I am surprised by the number of shrinks around, can't trust noone these days.

The first paragraph was meant for "in an ideal world", however reality always reasserts itself. Family, political, friendship, monetary, etc. ties will always override genuine effort.
