When you cut the cord a magical thing happens. You stop being bombarded by television ads and commercials and your body and mind starts to like this new found freedom from being marketed to. So much that you develop a distaste for marketing that permeates throughout the rest of your life. You start listening to NPR and streaming music services.Your friends ask you at work have you seen that latest ad for such and such and what do you think about the newest widget to come on the market. You nonchalantly just reply, "Sorry, haven't seen it."Your coworkers ask you have you seen the latest episode of that new TV show about that thing starring that girl you like so much. You sympathetically reply, "Sorry, haven't seen it."You start to live your life on your terms and your schedule.Gone are the days of making sure you were home on Thursday nights at 8 o'clock to watch your favorite show. You can binge a few episodes at a time on Saturday while you're waiting for your laundry to dry. Your Thursdays? They're now spent with your family.Advertising and marketing is some of the worst things that have happened in our society. With exceedingly rare exceptions each ad is formulated to program your brain and trick your subconscious into you spending money on something you probably don't want and certainly don't need.

@gme In the early aughts, long after I'd violently thrown my television into the dumpster, a co-worker made this "we're number one!" gesture at me.I waved. He rolled his window down and explained that it meant that I had left something on the roof of my car (which I had! thanks buddy!). Apparently, there was some famous commercial where the sports hero confused the gesture for success when in fact he'd left something on his car's roof. If I had watched TV, I would have known that.

Only an ad executive would co-opt a "We're Number 1!" to also mean somebody left something on the roof of their car. This is the only hand gesture I'm on the lookout for.... youtube.com/watch?v=yY_YQfJAIOU

@gme to be clear (since I ran out of characters) I wasn't upset at all. I was delighted to be ignorant of a commercial and a sports hero's cash grab. The interaction with my co-worker was much more rewarding than if I'd been some TV automaton.
