#OTD On August 19th, 1745, Prince Charles Edward Stuart raised his standard at Glenfinnan. This was the start of his campaign to regain the throne for his father. The monument in the photo marks the event, which locals refer to as "the '45".#Highlands #Scotland #history

Three days earlier the skirmish at the High Bridge had taken place:https://mstdn.io/@fitheach/108831740416135193Although not militarily significant, it did demonstrate that the loyal clans were willing to act. The timing was right to raise the standard at Glenfinnan. The commander of the MacDonalds at High Bridge, captured the grey gelding (horse) belonging to the captain of the government troops. He presented the horse to Prince Charles at Glenfinnan as a trophy.#Highlands #Scotland #history #OTD

A nice numerical coincidence. The Jacobite Rising of 1745 is known as "the '45". Those supporting independence in the 2014 referendum came to approximately 45%. Some of those Yessers referred to themselves as "the 45". 😃 #Yes #independence

@fitheach if you don't mind me asking, as I'm all the way over here in California: is Scotland going to hold another referendum on independence? If so, when would that happen and is there any polling on the sentiment of how Scots would vote this time around? Thanks!

@vincentj All it takes for a country to become independent is recognition by other sovereign states. A referendum isn't required. In Scotland's case, however, for the recognition to happen, a legal process has to be followed. The UK's process, by convention (2014), is a referendum agreed by both sides. However (2), the UK govt' doesn't want to lose Scotland and, hence, won't agree to a referendum, as they know, this time, they will lose.Do you see the problem?

@fitheach That's unfortunate. Thanks for the primer on Scottish Independence!
