What is the worst thing about our current technological systems? That is, what causes you the most upset feelings and/or anger? What is the best thing about our current technological systems? That is, what brings you the most joy and/or calm?

@urusan Worst: Planed obsolescence, things not being compatible/standarized, welded batteries that give devices an expiration date, things being made hard to fix deliberately.Best: Having vasts amounts of knowledge and entertainment available. Videogames. Console emulators and virtual machines (I love being able to play hundreds of old videogames on any android device).

@urusan The way the whole system is made, it is simly a madhouse.Few regulations, which lead to dangerous/greedy people take over. That's why we have our privacy problems. That is one of the many problems.

@urusan The worst: That the owners of the devices don't get to control them, and so the devices don't aim at our best interests. The best: That anything publicly known is available to me whenever I want it.

@allinone0 Is there an upside here? I was hoping to hear both the best and the worst.

@urusan I think the bar for computer literacy is entirely too low, and shaped to suit the interest of major vendors like Microsoft.I wouldn't expect the average person to be capable of developing a non-trivial C program, but I don't think the average person is in capable of learning how to interact with a POSIX shell and possibly do some basic scripting to tailor their experience to suit their needs.I don't want to be seen as part of a priesthood because I don't need a GUI.

@urusan That's a tough one, but I think most upsetting would be the fact that most modern tech is designed purely to profit off the fact that humans are addiction prone, and as a species still don't understand "consent".Most joyous, is also tough, but in the other direction. When I think about things in technology that bring me genuine joy, it's honestly mostly just nerdy elation about all the archaic old ways of doing things that still work under FOSS software.

@urusan As someone who has made technology their entire life far as long as they can remember, I thought I'd have so much more to say when it comes to current technology that brings me joy. But really I can't seem to think of much beyond encoding 4K video down to QVGA@12FPS, or using software on NetBSD 9 to control the built in CD player function of old CD ROM drives, and that sort of thing. Beyond that, a lot of the stuff I actually love to do is just getting harder with modern tech.

@colinsmatt11 Out of curiosity, what's your preferred alternative to Unix-based systems? Also, are you familiar with this (now free) book? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_UNIX-HATERS_Handbook

@urusan Honestly, when I think of the most fun I've ever had with computers, it's split between rebuilding computers with lots of daughter cards, and playing games on the same computer with my sibs when we were all younger. And with computers moving to fewer daughter cards, and games in this supposed "social" era of gaming being designed more and more to get players as far apart from eachother, not close together, current tech honestly sucks.

@urusan Or maybe I'm just ranting and spiraling again because I'm lonely, and don't know how to get out and meet people, now that my family is growing up and away from me.....erm, I digress :/

@urusan I tend to think it's not the technology itself that is good or bad, but the way people use it. Most people are complaining about how tools are being used.

@urusanWorst: people refusing to learn. Like, you bought a NAS for yourself, then you SHOULD learn how to use it, configure it, tweak it. Same with phones, other devices. And in this world, it's not an excuse that it's in English and not in that person's native one. Translators, forums do exist.Best: diversity. There are many solutions, different ways to solve a problem, and it's always refreshing to see a different one.

@urusan Worst: The Fallen Web. Just in terms of it being so enraging compared to what it was shaping up to be. And that's made even worse since what it's shaping up to be was the broken parody version of Xanadu.Best: Really happy with the current state of programming language development and how mainstream languages are actually incorporating interesting research ideas.
