Someone on fedi said that ads pollute webpages and I think marketing emails are the same for inboxes. They make checking your email a massive chore when it should be a pleasant experience.I have absolutely zero respect for most people in marketing and advertising. Their entire job is taking up more and more of our already limited attention. These people and companies compete to steal our attention away from things that actually need it, from open source projects, from work, from your personal business, and from friends. Our collective attention is worth so much to these assholes that there's literally an entire economy built around it. @digdeeper @amolith some cities in Europe prohibit ad banners in city centers. It's soo much better to walk through old towns without ads.You see there is always a way to stimulate mass of people to not do some stupid shit. Sometimes it's activists work and sometimes just the right law.

@grayrattus @digdeeper @amolith The Ipswich Society somehow managed to get advertising billboards banned here some time in the 1980s (previously there were loads, many for cigarettes which were also made in a factory in the town). This ban still exists today (to the point when I see ad billboards in other towns it seems unusual, although apparently its harder to sell space on billboards nowadays as companies want to use online marketing instead...

@dheadshot @amolith @shipp As I recall, you need to re-register with the Telephone Preference Service every year or two. (At least, you used to have to.)And, of course, it does nothing to deter scam calls. But it does serve to identify them: once you're registered with the TPS, every cold call is illegal and you can be as rude or devious as you like.

@digdeeper @amolith I remember seeing some article about a hypothetical augmented reality “adblock”. You would put on the glasses and it would automatically identify and black bar real world ads. No way would anything like that every get built and sold without it being taken advantage of for additional user tracking. Worst timeline.

It is a normal result of a trade based society. Anything that is traded, is abused and trashed. Resources, people, information, data, attention. Ads are simply an exploitation of the attention trade. It is not a new thing, it was there since the invention of media, but the Internet exacerbates it. By a lot.As long as the incentive is there, this abuse will always exist....

@tio @amolith uBlock Origin fixes it for Web browsing, NewPipe for YouTube, and Blokada for mobile phone apps that like to advertise at you, whereas Pi-Hole will protect your entire home network. Yes, adverts on the Net are obnoxious, but seeing them is largely optional nowadays, provided that you have the technical skills to shelter from them or the culinary skills to get a friend to do it for you. 🙂

Yes is true you can protect yourself. We added these tools, and more, by default to our TROMjaro Linux actually. But they work simply because they are not that popular. If they'd be and would threaten the trade business of those big platforms, they would make sure these tools are shut down or not work....unfortunately...

@tio @amolith @PawelK #Blokada sets up a VPN, which it uses to block unwanted connections. It works well. There's a full (but still free) version on #FDroid or a cut-down version (which complies with Google's policies) on the Play Store.Some people have recommended #TrackerControl as an alternative. I've not tried TC, but you're free to try both and see which you prefer.

For people who'd rather not set that up for themselves, there's https://nextdns.io/ , which I've not tried but which a work colleague uses and recommends. An allowance of 320k lookups a month for the free tier sounds like a lot but, judging by the traffic on our Pi-Hole, we get through more than that.

@amolith I trust zero advertising.When I want something, I find someone who is doing the same thing, and ask them what they have learned about what is available. I may ask in a forum dedicated to the topic. Then I look for the best price. In all that, I have zero engagement with commercial advertising. I personally think the entire industry is based on a lie. Aside from Super Bowl ads, how much can these campaigns be driving sales at all? I don’t know anyone who buys things as a result of spam or ads. The whole thing is a scam designed to extract money from small businesses. But I don’t experience hate like you seem to. I justkeep them out of my consciousness

@digdeeper @PawelK @wrongthink @amolith To be fair (when it comes to online), if ads weren't spyware, I don't mind small static banner ads that aren't too flashy and put somewhere that doesn't get in the way of content.The truly problematic ones are video ads that autoplay and minimize to somewhere in the background unmuted, epileptically flashing ads, ads inbetween paragraphs, in-video ads (especially the unskippable ones are evil), popup or popover ads, fake download button ads, external articles that pretend to be articles of the same blog ads, and so on.Those are the reasons why everyone uses adblockers.
