i want to know how to reconcile these two ideas:1. psychologically manipulative tactics are dangerous and should be legislated against2. people are rational actors who should be trusted to make their own decisionsif you disregard 1, you let advertisers, marketers, MLMs, gambling companies etc. get away with preying at vulnerable peopleif you disregard 2, then that means the entire basis of any kind of democratic government is worthless and we could just as well go back to monarchy or whatever

@devurandom 1 is wrong (unless those tactics cross a line into fraud, but finding that line is sort of its own rabbit hole). It does allow those groups to prey at vulnerable people, but sometimes the means required to stop bad behavior are as bad as the behavior itself.
