What is the most sustainable operating system?I started a new blog series to figure out what the most sustainable os is and mention problems with current systems.Part 1 is about "Updates vs. Stability vs. Virtualization" and I really can't find a solution to this problem. Please help me to figure out a good solution.#sustainability #co2 #greenIT #bitsundbäume #greenfediverse @greenfediversehttps://publish.ministryofinternet.eu/utopify-org/the-search-for-a-sustainable-operating-system-part-1-updates-vs

@utopify_org Obviously Arch as a Rolling Release needs more energy since it downloads more content. I would guess that Alpine Linux is even better because it is smaller and can run on old/refurbished hardware. I did a comparison once about energy consumption of operating systems (article in german: https://senioradmin.de/Energieverbrauch.html ) and Debian based Linux was best, followed by #FreeBSD. Windows 10 and #OpenBSD were the worst.

@Haydar @utopify_org /me is tempted to end my short-lived friendship with openBSD and come back to GNU/Linux :blobcatsweats:

@xarvos @Haydar I used FreeBSD for a few months, but went back to Linux. The reasons were, that I had to rewrite all my scripts ( #bashism ) and a lot of stuff just didn't work. Even if it's a good system, the bigger community is on the Linux site and more software is available for Linux. Many git repos I checked out wouldn't work on *BSD, but on Linux.

@utopify_org @Haydar Yea, I’ve also read that Linux makes better use of hardware than *BSD, which means better performance and as mentioned, better energy efficiency. I suppose it also has support for more devices (I am currently having problem with audio input). I also share the experience that a lot of my scripts are not working. Git doesn’t even have a completion for shells other than bash and zsh :blobcatfrowningbig: I kinda like being able to ^W to delete words without closing a tab though :comfymelt:

@NatCor Someone else recommended me to use #debian with btrfs, but I really don't know why this should be good?If an update breaks the system, is the rollback feature not broken, too?Does this take a lot of space, because I imagine it's like several backups of the whole disk? My machine is pretty old and free space is rare. My very first Linux distribution was OpenSuse and because I am still traumatized I haven't used it since then (~20 years ago).

@utopify_org@social.linux.pizza @NatCor@mastodon.social if you care about rollbacis try guix or nixos
