So, it really turns out SearX is a Debian package!

Don't use the package in Bullseye! It's an older version (0.18.0) and most of the engines are broken.

@avalos Do you know any useful comparison between running your own searx instance and other ways to ensure privacy, like using tor browser to search? Asking because a searx instance is a lot more work to install and maintain than just using tor browser, and it is also not clear to me how privacy is enhanced exactly.

@niconiconi Yeah, that's true, but most of the old software still works reliably for the whole cycle of the Debian release. SearX is different because engines need to be constantly reworked when they change, so older versions get increasingly broken with time.

@kspalaiologos @niconiconi I use Stable because I'd rather have stability than shiny new things, as it's a server. If I were to use Debian in desktop, maybe I would consider Sid or Testing.

@oseo In terms of privacy and anonymity, Tor has an obviously huge advantage over SearX or pretty much anything else. In terms of convenience, it's worse. The reason why I self-host SearX is not because of privacy. I'm the only user of my instance and my server has a static IP, so I'm very identifiable anyway. I just like the search-in-many-places feature, that's it.

@oseo SearX is more useful for privacy when you are using a big instance with tons of users. It strips away tracking elements and ads from the results, and aggregates your searches with everyone else's, so it gets harder to trace them back to you, as long as the instance doesn't log searches. If I did it for privacy, I would use Tor as well. If I were really paranoid, I would not use a search engine for potentially personal searches.
