How much have Google burnt me on chat apps by this point?Well, I spent my weekend setting up a Matrix instance with TURN so I can still videocall my parents, so.

(It bugs me to still have to rely on someone else hosting Element, but the mobile notification story is just horrible for individuals.)

@LionsPhil I was hoping that WebPush can solve this. It relies on the "platform" to provide the server but at least the protocol for pinging it is standardized and doesn't require the developer applying to access for each (or any) platform. However this doesn't seem to have left the web space yet.

@kevincox I think WebPush is not a thing on Safari iOS, so that’s another pain point. (And I doubt that it’ll make an appearance any time soon. Just like pointer lock API — we wouldn’t want game streaming services eating away at The Holy Profit, now would we. There are likely some regrets about enabling game controller APIs, too.) @LionsPhil

@LionsPhil It seems like Element on both iOS and Android is tolerable with push notifications. Those 10 messages a year that I receive seem to work just fine (as did the notifications from some rather noisy groupchats I recently joined). To take a slight detour into XMPP land: on Android, Conversations is reliable enough (if the Android version has not been hacked on by the device manufacturer to “save battery”; I’ve observed some friends having a neutered push notification system on their device, and repeatedly blaming apps).on iOS, Siskin seems to have started working well enough.no clue about webapp or desktop notifications :]The client can tell the server to register at a developer-run pubsub node and provide whatever platform-specific information the client can get from the platform. Then, the server sends an XMPP stanza to the developer-run server, which then turns that into the API call to the platform services. It’s a shame last few people who I was chatting with over XMPP abandoned it by the time Siskin got things to work reliably enough…I don’t like Matrix as a protocol, but it’s gotten its act together.

@ivan @LionsPhil I thought I heard that Apple finally commited to implementing it. But I don't follow that too closely. But even if it comes to Safari who knows if it will be available in the webview which would allow non-native apps to use the loophole.

@kevincox I heard the rumor that the devil is inquiring about heating appliances https://developer.apple.com/documentation/usernotifications/sending_web_push_notifications_in_safari_and_other_browsers @LionsPhil
