Ran into a friend from decades past (which is rare b/c I’m not on Facebook or the like). At some point she said “Isn’t Facebook cool?” Yikes. In trying to think on my feet all I could come up with was “no”. I was about to give the Zuck quote (“I don’t know why those dumb fucks give me all their data”), but stopped myself since it would be like telling her she’s dumb.

After the fact, I’m thinking since privacy is about control, you could say it’s cool to be in control and uncool not to. But what are we up against? A shitload of teens who use FB to discuss events/parties before & after. You cannot be a cool kid and be disconnected from that. No fucking way. Being social trumps being in control. So I really don’t know how to counter this…

Doesn’t matter what the old friend thinks, it’s the kids who force it on everyone. Grandma will be damned if she can’t stay in touch w/the grandkids by whatever means they are connected. Even schools now. Universities are announcing official school events on FB, as well as optional classes, exclusively.

@koherecoWatchdog cool vs uncool explained by a nerd smells like failure. but a simple "no" is more than adequate. imagine knowing but not tellingyou raise a pretty hard question. in my experience people understand control over personal data and the immanent threat of MegaCorp knowing each and every step we make. but it's not the kind of light-weight small-talk material we're used to exchange.it's a blurry line between digi-woke and surveillance-conspiracy for the clueless

@ruffni Well there was an inversion of what cool was in my high school time & place. An inversion from past gens where nerds were the opposite of cool. Jocks actually fell into marginally cool & nerds who played with drugs (psychedelics in particular) were well into the cool club. Psychedelics, Internet (when it was only a university thing), using PGP when normies were still email-unaware..

@ruffni I was expecting that trend to stick after I left. I thought it was a social advancement that it was no longer cool to get shitty grades & be sports-focused. But what happened? I go to a uni today & students are running Windows & Mac. No linux. And “crypto” only means money to these kids. It’s like a regression. It was flash in the pan that it was hip to be a rave-going nerd.

@ruffni One of the recent freshmen asked me to tell him what I know about “crypto”. I started explaining how PKI works, and he interrupted “no, no… I mean cryptocurrency”. Turns out he didn’t give a shit how encryption works, he just wanted to know how to profit from trading money.
