What technical capability/system is frustratingly just out of reach? What about frustratingly out of reach with open source (or at least by a company you trust)? What about frustratingly out of reach on hardware you already purchased and can't easily upgrade/sell?This could be something computer related (ex. laptop docking) or part of a physical system (ex. rooftop solar, an EV with the features and price point you'd be happy with).

@urusan I want to eliminate dependency on the browser on Android. But there's always something that doesn't have a workable app.

@urusan I have two GPUs with a decent amount of video RAM and I want to do AI stuff that can use that much RAM but they don't support multi GPU stuff so I have to buy new ones. Also, I have enough system memory to do the AI stuff with CPU computation but you can't use the system memory to do bottlenecked GPU computation even though you can use it on the CPU :(

For example, for several years now I've been able to dock my laptop to a 60 Hz 4k dual screen workstation using a single cable...on a Mac.This isn't a deal breaker, because my primary home machines are desktops. However, moving to such a dock-based system at home is appealing (-1 computer to manage and more mobility), so it's annoying that my current laptop doesn't have this capability. One screen or 30 Hz or multiple cables are more readily available. Also, this might exist now in 2022.

@urusan This reminds me of a talk by Jim Gettys I heard once where he was advocating for adaptive interfaces. Take advantage of the way processing power and storage for an average person to do most things can be put in your pocket and have it usable in a touch interface that blossoms into a desktop interface when you hook it to a screen/keyboard/mouse assembly.

@urusan (You could even go one further and have Plan 9 style storage and compute servers.)

Another one for me is that the minivan form factor is immensely useful for families, and EV minivans don't seem to exist at the moment.

@urusan minivans you transport people in are called MPVs (multi purpose vehicle) in UK/Europe to distinguish them from actual vans (that you might deliver parcels from or drive to a building site for work) - there are an increasing number of electric variants appearing, it may be they aren't as popular in USA yet (due to lower taxes on petrol/diesel and still cheap prices compared to Europe)

@urusan It's frustrating that car makers are mostly targeting the same EV form factor in the US for the next few years.I'm looking at eventually replacing my VW e-Golf with a small EV hatchback or sedan with CCS charging, and I don't see much on the horizon.I'd buy a VW ID.3 in a heartbeat, but VW isn't selling them here. Instead they're offering the bloated ID.4.

@vfrmedia Some of them did mention that the European version already existed, but US availability would be in the next few years (often 2024).I think it's less about popularity (at least beyond companies thinking they'll be more popular in the different countries) and more about the work needed to create two variants to fit the different rules and standards.

@urusan it certainly doesn't help that both the "free market" and traffic authorities have chosen to create multiple incompatible standards and regulations (on top of existing differences for conventional cars such as driving on right or left). Here in UK there's a problem that demand for chargers (other than at home) has vastly outstripped supply and many public chargers are defective with long wait times for maintenance (so EVs are only feasible for those with driveways or garages)

@urusan I’ve been wanting a non-apple 5k 27” display for years. Non integer scale factors never look right. (Which is why Apple picked that resolution.)
