I have to say, after disappointing me for a couple of years now, I might have finally given up on the Matrix protocol.

Its just too slow, and the only way to make it run efficiently is by throwing so much hardware at it that it becomes unrealistic as a truly decentralized SELF-HOSTABLE protocol.

@pavot I could only try it for a few months before giving up. Tried it again recently and still no.

@ru I've been trying for a long time, assuming it'll get better eventually. At this point I think I've run out of personal patience. I'm sticking to XMPP where everything seems to work for me.

@ru the server plays in to the clients sluggishness, so it's all a factor.

@pavot @ru XMPP is much lighter on resources, client-side and specially server-side. Good decision.

@pavot I stopped listening to a popular Linux podcast after the host said something along the lines of, "Why do people even use irc lol we have matrix"I don't hate matrix, but I kinda hate being forced to use heavy clients. IRC will never die.

@ru from a user perspective it definitely comes short, but I like it a heck of a lot more than Matrix. \o/ all it really needs is a snazzy client for every device.

@RL_Dane There are some VERY light (terminal) clients out there for Matrix, but that protocol is always going to be slow imo.

@pavot @RL_Dane having used WeeChat, including the plugins for E2EE chats,It's lightweight, sure.It also feels jank as hell.

@pavot Yeah, that’s the biggest one. But also user friendliness is always playing catch up. It’s just never really “arrived” for me.

@pavot I know Matrix can slow down and chew threw resources as the home server's usage/user count grows or if it's federated with other large home servers. I'm not sure at what point running a XMPP server becomes the better/only option between the two though. Was there a particular point (eg: 100 active users, federating with matrix.org, etc.) that you realized you needed more hardware or abandon Matrix?
