@fatboy 😆 "I've been re-using mine for several years now. It's outlasted all my other hats so it's great for the environment too!"

@thorn I've done something similar, but it hasn't changed their views on my or their FB account status unfortunately

@brandon Frances Haugen: The thing I saw at Facebook over and over again was there were conflicts of interest between what was good for the public and what was good for Facebook. And Facebook, over and over again, chose to optimize for its own interests, like making more money. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/facebook-whistleblower-frances-haugen-misinformation-public-60-minutes-2021-10-03/

@jonbeckett I'm generally fine with the size of snap packages to ensure there are no dependency versioning issues. What I'm not fine with is poorly maintained snap packages and snap eating up CPU/memory on low end machines. When snap runs the scheduled updates, it consumes more resources than any other process on my machine and the machine can grind to a halt for up to an hour!

@brandon @jb as long as the MFA service doesn't require proprietary apps (eg: Authy, Microsoft Authenticator, Google Authenticator, etc.), then I don't think it's too bad. It would be nice if we were provided a PC application to handle 3rd party sites/services' MFA directly on the employer's device (although I guess you would still need to use a different device to help authenticate you onto the employer's device/network).

@brandon @thorn Something about this doesn't add up. If Mastodon was tracking its users for a mass surveillance project, wouldn't it have successfully detected that @thorn logged in on the same device?

@PsychoLlama don't you end up placing a lot of trust in Cloudflare with this approach? It seems like a great solution that solves a few big problems, but I believe Cloudflare is remotely decrypting (if its leaving your hardware encrypted) and re-encrypting the contents. If that's true, Cloudflare could MITM attack or read/collect/share your data. May not matter too much if its only serving up a public blog, but I'm hesitant to serve anything private/sensitive over this solution.

@jrballesteros05 @PsychoLlama hadn't heard of this before - it looks interesting. It seems conceptually similar to setting up a VPN on a VPS (including the amount of work/maintenance). Any reason to do this over using a VPN?

@fatboy thanks for sharing. I'm excited for some of the 2022 features. Really hoping to also see starred and pinned posts in the new year as mentioned on Matrix's 2021 post.https://matrix.org/blog/2021/12/22/the-mega-matrix-holiday-special-2021/#2022

@thenewoil FHE seems great, but I would really like to understand it better. For example, how do we know that FHE leaves no traces behind? For instance, following one of the examples from the article, if a user asks a Google Nest Hub for pictures of an actor, Google wouldn't be able to record/log the actual voice query. However, wouldn't Google still be able to log that img_123.jpg (the image of the requested actor) was served to IP address x.x.x.x (the user's IP address)?

@fatboy I'm not thrilled about this change, but what's the concern (aside from Google and your employer/vendor/customer collecting even more information about you)? It doesn't appear to be a new data point, but instead a more precise data point. It does seem like it could be helpful to troubleshoot and help identify possible congestion on the employee's (or even employer's) network. Some of the other data points listed in the article that are already being collected seem more worrisome.

@fatboy Sadly, this isn't a new practice. This has been observed for at least 5-10 years now. I'm sure it is more pervasive and aggressive than it was in years past though. Hopefully with the increased attention to privacy, this practice can be eliminated.https://thehackernews.com/2017/11/website-keylogging.html?m=1https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2013/12/17/are-the-websites-youre-using-tracking-what-you-type/

@rridley days like these? Lightning game days?If your Lightning superstition is eat pizza for a Lightning win, then you should do it. After all, there are only a few games left before the NHL off season and you'll lose your excuse for pizza for a few months!

@fatboy are you looking for a recommendation or just something that is reasonably priced and available? A quick search on Amazon shows a few in the under 15 price range. AliExpress has a few under 5 price range. Not sure of the pricing in your area, what shipping fees you'd be subject to, or the quality of the ones that came up, but they seem readily available.Hope you are using a supported custom ROM for the Pixel 3 though since its EOL.

@kzimmermann agreed! I just hope that as Matrix adoption increases, we don't end up with an even larger concentration of users on those ~13 nodes

@pavot I know Matrix can slow down and chew threw resources as the home server's usage/user count grows or if it's federated with other large home servers. I'm not sure at what point running a XMPP server becomes the better/only option between the two though. Was there a particular point (eg: 100 active users, federating with matrix.org, etc.) that you realized you needed more hardware or abandon Matrix?

@brandon this requires you to trust your email provider/host with potentially sensitive data (although you probably more issues than just receipts received via email if you don't).I would definitely agree with this if email was generally more secure and private than it is.
