revolt be like, self hosted discord! except we encourage you to not self host revolt and instead use the global instance for adoptionhttps://developers.revolt.chat/faq/instances#an-argument-against-self-hosted-communitiesuh huh

@izaya@social.shadowkat.net i actually prefer that they don't want to do federation and instead maybe support SSO with other instances instead, but that's a separate conversationand revolt is literally just a way to get people off of discord, these people won't use xmpp

@shibao both revolt and matrix could've literally been spicy XMPP clients and wouldn't have contributed to fragmentation without losing anything

@izaya @shibao yeah that's decentralization for you, probably will be more so since they're moving to p2p. I really like the Element client personally.

@shipp @shibao XMPP, a decentralised - federated, even - protocol, doesn't have these issues

@shipp @shibao initialising a new TCP connection or polling an existing HTTP connection uses much more power than leaving a long-timeout TCP connection open and waiting to be woken up by the server

@shipp @shibao beyond that though, matrix has no provision for extension and implementing a fully-featured client either means making a webpage (ie element) or implementing half of a web browser. Not to mention that the standard is a moving target and will forever be tied to Element and whatever the devs of that feel like changing.

@izaya @shibao Yeah the tcp should be fixed, but hardly seems like a deal breaker. There are plenty of other Matrix clients, but obviously they'll be behind Element. Are the devs responsible for keeping other clients updated with the moving spec? The fast moving spec is the reason why matrix is a breath of fresh air compared to xmpp/irc/etc, and being a competitive alternative to popular centralized messaging servers requires quick deployment and development.

@shipp @shibao There's a system for that, you implement something and write a spec (or the reverse, both are fine), then submit it as a draft XEP, where it will be discussed, and is available for other people to see and implement (as a draft, or after finalisation) if they want to.:)
