Which came first in web browsers, history or bookmarks? Does the existence of the former obviate the need for the latter?#web #www #WebBrowser #bookmarks

@strypey I think you could see the last few pages you surfed to in the early Netscapes. Canʼt fully recall!

@strypey Bookmarks support parameters for string substitution and keywords (history does not). Bookmarks can also be removed selectively. Whereas with history if you want to remove 1 record I suspect you must remove all (all or nothing).

@strypey NCSA Mosaic had bookmarks before history. Its predecessors did not include bookmarks but I'm not sure if they had history

@strypey I don’t know which came first, but history is no substitute for bookmarks: it’s too long to find anything and contains a lot that you’ll never want to see again.

@billstclairTo find things in history you just start typing in the address bar. In the browsers I use I can even combine a base URL with a keyword or two to find specific pages I've mentioned on a site.

@strypey True. I use that, too, when I can think of a subset of what I'm looking for. Often, my short term memory is so blasted that I can't even do that, absent-minded professor brain.

@jackyan @strypey I remember having both way back when I started, in Netscape certainly. I can check my Mosaic manual later on though ;)

@jackyan @strypey So it looks like Mosaic versions (there were several) tended to have a rudimentary "Hotlist" functionality - some had in-built editors, but others didn't. Attaching a photo of some of the text for 16-bit NCSA Mosaic...

@jackyan @strypey 32-bit NCSA Mosaic 2.0 had a "burning document icon combined with a plus sign ... to add a document to the Hotlist" which is, apparently, "a nice feature".

@jackyan @strypey Netscape used the term "Bookmarks" instead, and had a pretty fully-fledged Bookmark editor at that point (see photo). All of the browsers here have some kind of back/forwards cache navigation in them.

@jackyanI remember those days. Apparently our forerunners felt the same excitement about television in its early days. Then somehow it all ended up dominated by a handful of giant corporate networks ...@scribe

@strypey That sounds familiar!Imagine seeing TV at the Centennial Exhibition at Rongotai … then having to wait another 20 years before NZBC started broadcasting!

@aoikurayamiThat makes sense but I have a vague memory that bookmarks came well before history. Might vary from browser to browser.
