wicca primarily serves the purpose of making witchy aesthetics available in the culture, so that people like me can access e.g. a nice silver cup or an offering dish that isn't tied to Christianity or Judaism

to me, of course. if you genuinely find that the wiccan belief system suits you that's wonderful for you.

I will say though that like. wicca I'd a pretty inherently bioessentialist religion and even my diehard Gardeneian aunt became kinda iffy about identifying w it after she married a trans woman. no you don't have to be transphobic to be wiccan but like. it's definitely not inherently compatible w a trans-positive worldview, you have to do some work

anyway go start your own religion, atheism is boring and all the existing religions out there suck, including mine.

@tindall I dont think that atheism is boring. Atheism forces you to constantly question your assumptions and thus keeps you busy all the time. Atheism is HARD. Religions on the other hand always take the easy way out: they just make up stuff to explain unpleasant facts, no matter how inconsistent even with their own views.

@tindall Another thing is that religions always claim that they can explain everything. They cannot admit defeat. Atheists on the other hand more often than not have to admit that they don't know exactly how something works. They DO admit defeat. They know that they can't explain everything, but constantly strife to fill the gaps without just making up stuff.

@vvv This world-view is why I think atheism is boring.Religion is useful in addressing things which are fundamentally unknowable. It, like all belief, must always yield to evidence, but rejecting the concept of belief through personal gnosis isn't useful and is, in my opinion, boring.

@vvv I would also say that thinking of all religion as equally anti-science comes from a fundamentally culturally Christian viewpoint.

@tindall I didn't say that religions are anti-science by and large, IMHO they often just ignore scientific explanations that run contrary to their beliefs. But experiencing something as "boring" is highly subjective, so I admit that for you atheism may be boring while for me all the religions are boring due to their inherent inconsistencies and tendency to make up stuff to aviod the hard work of finding an explanation that actually works within the experienced reality of all people.

@vvv Indeed, this is entirely subjective. I note, though, that you are still attributing characteristics of some religions to all religion as a concept.> all the religions are boring due to their inherent inconsistencies and tendency to make up stuff to aviod the hard work of finding an explanationNot all religions actually contradict evidence, nor do all exist to avoid doing work to discover things. Some things are fundamentally not amenable to evidence-based inquiry, and the best belief systems work on finding useful ways to talk about those things.

@tindall @vvv >Not all religions actually contradict evidencedo you think that you could argue that, since 99%+ of people practice such a religion, it's essentially correct?

@vvv @tindall AYYYYY lmaocatholic church doctrine, since Thomas Aquinas is based on Aristotelian physiology, which is highly scientific. Even saint Augustine, back IV century taught, that religion cant contradict natural science.
