What's the oldest item you own that still gets regular use?Houses don't count for the purposes of this question, though cars do. I'm looking for personal property.Additionally, if your oldest item was previously owned by someone else for an extended period of time, what's the oldest item you bought or received new? Also, if either item sat in storage more than half of its lifespan, was there an item that has seen more continuous use?

@urusan I'm at a disadvantage since I'm homeless so most of material possessions are in storage. But: probably my Amiga 1200 (got it in 1994) or some Technics turntables (also from a similar vintage).I unequivocally would be using them, daily if I didn't exist in a ring of hell where housing isn't considered a basic right.

@urusan I have two "power centers" -- basically power strips with five outlets and a cord in the back, and individual switches for each of the receptables and a master in the front, which are about the size of a pizza box each. One is from I think the mid-late 80s and the other is from probably the early 90s at the latest. I still use both. (I'm including photographs in case I'm describing this poorly.) (The Apple IIe shown is older, but was bought used about ten years ago.)

@urusan this line of questioning makes me extremely uneasy because it reminds me of sophomoric misguided attempts to prematurely optimize as done by some bone headed coders of yesteryears who were trying to maximize all the wrong things and ended up throwing out more than the metaphorical baby with the bathwater because "they hadn't been used in a while."Pretty sure that erroneous sort of code still crops up way too often to be good for anything or anyone.

@urusan The oldest regularly used items would be some cast iron skillets and a dutch oven from the early 20th century, while the oldest that I purchased new would be a tie between a bottle opener, hunting knife, and some tools that I bought in the early 1981/82 -- only because things bought earlier were lost in a house fire. I never let go of useful things.

@urusan headphones. I have a pair of Bose QC 15 noise cancelling headphones from 2011. It's a trusty wired headphone, the only thing I've had to fix was the foam ear cuffs wearing out. No sealed lithium batteries, just a generic double AA to power the noise cancelling. It's been the reason I've only bought phones with a headphone jack until now. Well, I guess It's time for me to put a USB c to aux adapter on it.

@urusan @zens my desk is from around 1925 (could be as late as 1931). I have a light fixture from 1919 that I rehabbed but it’s rehab was so extensive that it’s arguable whether it’s still the original. I haven’t had much in the way of new things in my life until fairly recently, but I do have a 21-year-old computer still in active use, which is the oldest thing in that category I can think of that’s actually a thing I use (as opposed to just look at)

@urusan Honestly? Probably my mattress. It's originally my brother's when we were kids, but mine got given away to family along with a bunk bed that took a double, but by then I had my own room and so this mattress is at least 20 years old. One side was getting super worn out, but I flipped it to tide me over and ended up completely forgetting about replacing it, so for all I know it might last me 20 more.

I am not sure exactly when it was made but my mum first remembers using it in my grandmother's garden about 70 years ago.

It sits on my dresser and I keep my batteries and battery chargers in it.One of the plastic boxes I collect dirty laundry in I got new as a kid to keep toys in, so I guess it's ~30 years old.

@urusan regular use would be mugs, I suppose. Some if the ones I use regularly are about as old as 2nd ed Rolemaster, which I use a lot less than I would like. There's also a wooden plate I dump coins in. That may actually be a tiny bit older. It's hard to say now. Also, "use" is relative. I have some glass high voltage insulators I use as bookends. They're probably from the 50s.

@urusan The oldest thing I use daily and know the approximate age is a sound system I got from my parents, which is now 30 years old or so. Maybe some of our tables or chairs are older, all of those were bought second-hand so I have no real idea. The oldest thing around that I got new is probably a plushy I got for my first birthday, so over 26 years now.

@urusan I have a keyring shaped like a cannon my parents got me, oh, 32 years ago. It's been in my pockets most days since. I'm continually amazed I haven't lost it yet. (Early on I swapped it for other keyrings a couple of times -- and promptly lost my keys.)Knock on wood.

@urusan Three cooking pots that belonged to my mother's parents, likely acquired within a few years of my mother's birth. I ate breakfast out of one of them this morning.A Singer sewing machine model 66-16, purchased used from a previous owner. Their notes said it's a 1947 model.New for me: soft baby toys -- either the swan a friend of the family crocheted for me, or the doll that wears one of my baby dresses -- loved but little used.New to me practical: post-college kitchenware.

@urusan my main sewing machine is a Brother from the 1970s. It was my mom's before it was mine but I've been using it since I was a kid.Oldest thing I got new: my stuffed platypus who I've had since I was three and who is still an integral part of my sleep setup. His name is Ducky.

@urusan We have a lot of old stuff kicking around here, whether because we purchased/were given it second hand (antique French stove top waffle iron, our Sansui amplifier, old wooden cabinet-style speakers, etc) but I don't know how old a lot of it is. Our Kitchenaid mixer is the same one I made stuff with as a teenager, so it's gotta be around 27-30 years old, and it gets regular use.

@urusan @dartigen up until a couple of years ago when it finally properly died, it was my Kenwood Chef A501 that was my grandmother’s and dated from around the late 1950’s/early 1960’s. Now it would be the Sunbeam electric frying pan from my other Grandmother, circa late 60’s at a guess, maybe 70’s.

@urusan My Mom's stainless steel skillets and pots. They're probably about 70 years old (I'm assuming she got them shortly after my parents married). I also regularly use my Dad's binoculars, which are nearly as old. Both are older than me. I'm having trouble thinking of my own things. There are a few books, but they aren't used "regularly."

@urusan I have a custom-made clock from my grandfather's job retirement that is about 25-30 years old. Also a few pots for cooking that are over 30.Those are the only ones that fit the "continous use" criteria.

@urusan I have some furniture, dishes and a handmade Chess Board from my great grandma. They must be from the late 1920s when she got married. These are still in use. There is also a bible from her mother from 1896 sitting on the shelf.

@urusan I have a tester (small screwdriver) they handed out in boot camp for cleaning corners in ones rifle. Obviously I use it for much more peaceful reasons since.I have a towel rack that belonged to my grandfather, it's been by my bed since my youth and used daily. Some of our kitchen items are from my partners grandmother - including a pasta strainer which is used multiple times a week.

@urusan I guess it would have to be my dressers? My parents had them and handed them down to me when I was a tiny precious innocent baby. I have still continued using them both. No idea how old they are but they've gotta be verging on 50 years old at least?

@urusan Very nice question... my oldest "new" item is probably my 81's Vespa, though not regularly used any more. I use a lot of inherited/used kitchen stuff, the most interesting might be a couple of timeworn coffee cups I brought from Ukraine, they date back to Soviet times and I use them every morning. Hmm, and there are a pair of potholders my grandma crocheted ...

@urusan We have been getting wooden furniture, mostly solid used pieces. I would guess the bentwood chairs are the oldest, having come from a restaurant that closed say thirty years ago. I'm going to guess they're seventy years old.

@urusan A surprisingly tough question.I think the _newest_ thing I regularly use would probably be this computer - though the answer to _that_ question should probably be shoes, since after ~6 years and who knows how many miles and a mountain my only pair is somewhat beyond repair. It's interesting, very little - especially of day-to-day items - is particularly recent, but especially with post-lockdown changes I'm not sure anything is overly old either.
