People want advanced PDA-style devices with physical keyboards and styluses and a clamshell design. Nobody asked for touchscreens. It's me. I'm people.

@Alamantus not as nice to type on as the Gemini but have you seen GPD's Intel palmtops? https://www.gpd.hk/I haven't tried planet computers' astro or cosmos successor pdas but the gemini was like a psion revo but with a mildly buggy android.

@stevelord The operating system would be the only thing to make me hesitate on something like this. My very first personal laptop was a netbook with a 9" screen and the very best OS I tested on it was the now defunct Moblin, and I'd kill for something like that again https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moblin

@Alamantus @stevelord I ran this on my HP mini netbook too, right into the Meego era! It seemed to go a bit into the weeds after that unfortunately.Anyways I moved onto GNOME 3 after that though it took years for it to become a match to Moblin for this use case.

@msh Were you eventually able to get GNOME 3 comparable to Moblin? The switch to Meego kinda killed it for me, and I'd love to see possible modern setups similar to the old Moblin/Meego!

@Alamantus On the old HP Mini netbook GNOME 3 never really got to where I liked it as much as Moblin unfortunately, however on my #PineBookPro with Wayland and fractional scaling set just so and just a couple minor tweaks it rivaled Moblin...of course just in the twilight of the GNOME 3 era LOL.GNOME 40's transition while not completely smooth has been WAY better than how jarring going to GNOME 3 was at least, and it seems (at least to my peculiar tastes maybe) to be on the right trajectory for the kinds of devices I use it on.

@msh @Alamantus keep in mind that GNOME 40 wasn't really a transition at all - it was just the next GNOME version after 3.38. They decided to drop the leading '3' on the version number, and that's the only thing particularly special there. It's full of all of the same types of incremental changes and updates as previous GNOME 3 releases.

@msh @Alamantus well, i guess they did take the opportunity to include a redesign of the activities overview - the switch from vertical to horizontal virtual desktops and moving the dash from the left to the bottom was kind of a big *design* change, although not that big of a difference in underlying functionality.

@kepstin @Alamantus definitely an evolutionary approach which is easier on users. The most challenge will be for developers this time around with transitioning applications to GTK4 and libadwaita 1.0 without too much ugliness for users probably.
