Upgrading your computer because it can't handle 50+ browser tabs is like installing a swimming pool because your kitchen sink can't hold every dish you have. It's an extravagant, privileged solution to the wrong end of a problem.

I came up on hardware that was 10-20 years out of date when I was using it, because that's the best I could get. And you know what? It worked fine. Using these junky old systems taught me patience, and how to think through a task before I do it. And most of all it taught me to never trust a computer with anything important: paper is crash-proof. It also taught me about the relentless cycle of enforced obsolescence that pervades our society, and that I want no part of it.

@cassvs You are right about installing a swimming pool in the kitchen is wrong. I worked in a restaurant we didn't need a swimming pool to hold every dish. In contrast, we need large sinks. Because a swimming pool doesn't split between unwashed dishes, 1st-pass washed dishes, etc. Moreover, making a pipeline in a swimming pool is too big for working in a pipeline manner. Still, buying a proper kitchen sink is essential. I used to get injured because of an improper one. 🤔

@cassvs lol, do people actually do that? Why would anyone need 50 tabs opened at once?

@neauoire @cassvs My coworker had so many tabs open (much more tha 50) that it became hard for him to manage. To fix this he INSTALLED A SECOND BROWSER to handle the overflow.

@zens @neauoire @cassvs In my experience, I can open as many tabs as I want as long as I close the Facebook tab. 😪

@neauoire @cassvs basically, closing tabs is busywork meant to satisfy the needs of a machine and my personal philosophy forbids humans doing work for the benefit of machines

@cassvs i have a beefy desktop for heavy experimentation, dev, and games, and i limit all m yother devices to like used thinkpads and older hardware lol. servers become an entirely different story, you really do need all the resources they provide even for efficient software
