@martijnbraam why? I'll do what I want with the hardware I own. Isn't that the whole point?

@loveisgrief Android doesn't magically "Just Work" on the PinePhone, that would take some android developers some months to get drivers running for all that hardware and fix up the calling system that's implemented there. And that's all effort that won't benefit the Linux mobile community at all.

@martijnbraam Pure, OS Android. Can it be found anywhere? Even the Pixel phones have code not found in AOSP

@martijnbraam that all doesn't matter. If somebody wants to sink time into making android work on the PinePhone, it's their choice. They bought, they own it, they can do pretty much whatever they want with as long as it doesn't hurt anybody. We aren't GAFAM and trying to lock down users' hardware or chastising them because "we know what's best for them" or "but it doesn't help us". I think were supposed to be better than that. We shouldn't become the thing we hate.

@martijnbraam isn't a big appeal of the pine phone the hardware switches for features like camera/GPS? This post makes it sound like the only reason anyone wants one is for Linux on mobile but I have seen a lot of people talk about them from a security standpoint purely because of these switches, and that's not exactly a standard feature another phone has

@martijnbraam @loveisgrief AFAIK it does work (untested yet)...And since the pinephone allows to have the OS on the SD card, it's easy to test.

@martijnbraam I do agree, at least as far as don't beg for it.If they develop it them self I see no problem, and I do get the desire... I hate the lack of long term support for Android phones.(And the none triviality of building newer roms due to lacking kernel / driver sources/mainlining)That said I have a (unhealthy?) obsession with running Debian on everything and don't care much for running Android on the pinephone

@martijnbraam I have an Android port to the Pinephone. But the CPU in it doesn't have any meaningful low power modes, so it could never be a daily driver. Toasty warm and out of battery in half a day.

@martijnbraam @loveisgrief We could say the same with having > 10 distros of Linux duplicating the work.I mean if someone is welling to port Android to this phone and there's a community welling to use it then folks are welcome to do so even if some of us would prefer to see more work done on Linux.

@martijnbraam The only thing I would kill for from Android is the battery life. Otherwise I love my Pinephone more in every other way.

@PublicLewdness @martijnbraam That's on the hardware. I can see Android maybe doing a litte better (if it supported all accelerators and circuitry in the SoC) than #mobilelinux, but only minutes better, not hours.

@linmob That's not good news if true. If software optimizations can't bridge the gap then the battery life will always be poor.
