Congratulations for #Matrix on reaching 60 million users!https://news.itsfoss.com/matrix-sixty-million-users/... however, it's 60M distributed over how many nodes?According to the data here, it's only about 13: https://www.hello-matrix.net/public_servers.php?format=json&only_public=true. Of course, not official, but still pretty low: averages to about 5M per instance. Not the load of what #federation should be IMO. :P#decentralization

@kzimmermann Still remains to be known, of this include all the bridged "users". Would imagine that would bring that number down *significantly*.

@kzimmermann agreed! I just hope that as Matrix adoption increases, we don't end up with an even larger concentration of users on those ~13 nodes

@milan that's a more relieving number. The load's about 30k users per instance, then, but even then I think it's a little too high: one node goes down and 30k users go dark? I think that might even be more skewed, though, since during the beginning of the project there were only 2 or 3 main servers, so I think it's not unrealistic to think that they still hold like 70% of all users. But then again I'm in Fosstodon...

@kzimmermann i probably would have been running a server a long time ago if #dendrite were ready. The Synapse #matrix server's requirements are unacceptable to me.

@ITwrx that's what I heard, many people complained it's hard to host a synapse server, including putting aside the RAM and CPU required by it. OTOH, one can put an #XMPP server running quite quickly and easily with software like Prosody. I did it myself with a sub-Gigahertz netbook way back.

@jinxd true, and I guess that's one of the side-effects of federated services: we'll never really know the true size of it (yay, privacy!). But yes, I do remember a lot of "bridging" going on in XMPP and IRC rooms linked with Matrix.

@kzimmermann @ITwrx https://github.com/spantaleev/matrix-docker-ansible-deploy has largely done away with the need for headaches in administration, but the resource needs remain high. Looking forward to next generation of homeservers with dendrite et al.

@downey cool, I was wondering if someone would ever write a docker deploy script or something for it. Good to know!@ITwrx

@selea @ITwrx @kzimmermann my Synapse server has been running for 4 years on a entry level VPS with no issues.less than 25 users, but it does handle the WhatsApp bridge as wellkey point is to use Postgres and not the default sqlite though

@kzimmermann I'm confused... it's 13 public servers, but it's more distributed because a lot of people pay for their own private servers (for them/their community)

@selea @kzimmermann thanks, but can you quantify "running fine" and "small vps"? how much ram and cpu does it use? are large public rooms being joined? i only see "At least 1GB of free RAM if you want to join large public rooms like #matrix:matrix.org" in the docs. "at least" doesn't tell me anything all that useful, especially without any user numbers.

@ITwrx I am a member of large room.It is doing fine with 1 vCPU and 1 GB RAM.I actually have decreased the resources since the last year - it was way worse back in 2020/2019.I do run both redis and postgresql on the same machine.@kzimmermann

@ITwrxIt has come a long way since the first release. You dont need a dedicated expensive machine anymore @kzimmermann
