@jrballesteros05 heh, once I was messing around witn C# in the company's computer during holiday season and decided to see what the diagnostics would really do with intentional buggy code. So I made main.cs with the line `a = 1 / 0` in it and ran (compiled fine).Sure enough the "Windows encountered a problem and is looking for a solution" window came up and I let it look for it. It was very, very sorry it couldn't find it, but suggested I told Microsoft about the issue.

So I think today is the last (or almost?) day of the #oldcomputerchallenge and, very unfortunately, I missed it due to a very busy week. But, as the challenge's own description says, it doesn't matter if you miss the right window, you can try it all year long.So this is what I'll be trying to do: over this weekend and the next one, I'll dust off my thick Celeron single-core 2010 laptop and take it for a ride with trusty #AlpineLinux for this challenge. Let's see how interesting it gets.

Without writing a report on it, a little update on my #OldComputerChallenge: I've limited the laptop to 700MB RAM and yet I think I overestimated the amount: about 24 processes running (lots of graphical applications, too) and Alpine is consuming just under 200MB of RAM, which includes a browser (dillo).I might spoil the party later and open firefox, but so far, it's so controlled. I have chat apps, IRC, email and all functionality I want, even watched youtube videos with MPV.

This year, however, I'll try to make it interesting by adding a few different goals and rules. Anyone can run a console-only session with tmux and run the world there in 150MB or less (gotta love Linux <3), so let's stir things up a little with these rules:-Maximize Graphical applications instead of CLI as much as possible-Run as many applications as possible in parallel to really stress test it-Try to reproduce as much of my daily workflow as possible, perhaps raising the limit to 700MB RAM

I may be late to the party, but here it is: my #OldComputerChallenge experiencehttps://kzimmermann.0x.no/articles/2024_old_computer_challenge.htmlIt felt good to do it again since my last one in 2021. I tried to do something a little different this time and it was surprisingly pleasant. I have an optimistic view that this old computer will survive a lot more years!57 on my #100DaysToOffload challenge as well#occ2024

Sometimes I might feel like I was born too late, but there's something nostalgic from looking at pictures of these old #Unix workstations.Like, their design, branding and the fact that they're never really laptops just brings such a cozy feeling computer-wise.And this because I never used one. Yet they give me such a nostalgia!

This one, for instance. It screams out "Unix" when you look at it! Why?

Hey fedi, I'm looking for a (hopefully cheap) SBC that has excellent Linux support and not too much resources (RAM, CPU, etc). Can y'all give me some suggestions?I specifically wanna ditch #RaspberryPi here given their recent stuff, and also because I want to scale down in computing power, not up (use natural cooling, etc). I'd want something that has specs between the Pi2 and Pi3. 1GB RAM is enough. Good FreeBSD support would be great, but not a must. What do you recommend?#askFedi

Gave in to the peer pressure and bought myself a watch as well. Not quite #CasioCult, but should work equally well I think. And the greatest thing about it? It prevents me from having to *reach into my smartphone* to do something as simple as knowing what time is it, and thus risk getting caught up in its attention-seeking business.Less screen-watching, less device dependency, more serenity of mind.Fuck smart devices.

In times of these annoying AI-generated images, here's a little something for y'all: a profile picture-like or logo-like image of a Penguin with transparent background. Can't claim the full credit for it, basically took a free PD image, did some editing with the amazing #GIMP and here it is.Use it at will, folks.#logo #picture #creativecommons

#NetBSD folks: I'm having a pretty frustrating issue with the #wpi wireless driver (Dell Latitude D620) in which it works out of the box (even during install - amazing), yet after some "stress" put on it (installing a lot of packages, downloading large files...) it simply stops working. Not even service network restart will put it back. Lights are still on, but no ping, no link, nothing. I have to reboot.Nothing in dmesg either. what could I try?#lazyweb

@strypey amazing find! Thanks for sharing. The only real "hair in the soup" is their use of #Cloudflare on the site (downloads via IPFS or other sites may completely avoid that, I don't know). But man, what a truly collaborative effort. All of their datasets and stuff is bittorrent backed by volunteers - and you're encouraged to contribute to it.Thanks for sharing!#CultureShare

I decided to go a step further and build an installable .deb file for @dillo with the checkinstall tool. This is useful for Debian users that can't get the latest release from the repositories. I had never done this before, and I guess the package is really sloppily made, but it should work and is easier than bulding from source. But at any rate: any package maintainers out there, please tell me how can I improve! Available here: https://kzimmermann.0x.no/updates/20250307_0129.htmlPinging @wilfredo: FYI

#NetSurf is incredibly outdated on #Debian stable today: the version shipped is from 2020!Fortunately, there's a way to run the latest without having to resort to Flatpak or building from source:https://kzimmermann.0x.no/updates/20250319_1924.html#minimalistbrowsers
