Hey fellow educators. I am old enough to remember the fuel the home PC revolution added to "computer literacy." I was first on the internet in 1992, and in short order (yet always a little late) "information literacy" became a university GE topic, program or even requirement. What we need to get to work on RIGHT NOW is artificial intelligence literacy.

@km6ecc I don't agree. The more we formalize, the less we get the best.

@amerika @km6ecc lol yeah, "computer literacy" in the 90s.Hey kids this is a mouse! This is how you click! This is how you double click! This is how you drag and drop! This is how you open MS Paint! This is how you change the font size in Word!Meanwhile the smarter kids are ranging from trying to get to the command prompt to just format the HDD for fun to trying to get access to the grade database.

@dew_the_dew @km6ecc I was lucky and had some good classes, mostly because of living in the shadow of a few major universities. But for the average person, Computer Literacy was typing class and how to use MS Word to write a letter to grandma.

@dew_the_dew @km6ecc In the early 90s, your computer literacy was still done on terminals. This is The Right Way according to me.

@km6ecc How can we get anywhere near AI literacy when most people say "I hate math"? It's like, the most common shared sentiment outside of hating dentists and taxes. AI literacy requires knowing real math, hard math, multidimensional shit. We have such a long way to go. Let's teach everyone about compound interest first.

@PhenomX6 @km6ecc @amerika @dew_the_dew Which is tolerable maybe just as an introductory, but the problem is when they never graduate beyond those hand holders. This is why I think the real starting point should be to throw people into a terminal text editor and a compiler.

@amerika @wrongthink @PhenomX6 Linux shell is exactly where we start, installing (RPi of course.) The goal is to get them moving pixels around on tile displays. Python MPI and other libraries, often Pygame. So they pick up a lot of basic networking too. A+ students get there by building small cluster. Then we have an exhibition. Two sequence course.

@km6ecc I disagree. The hard push toward machine intelligence is dangerous and is being pursued without wisdom.
