I recently built an all #amd PC for my college-bound daughter. Today, we drove to Best Buy to pick up the operating system. That is such a strange concept. I can't believe I paid for a copy of #windows11.

@codeHaiku I... I can't believe that's an actual thing anybody would choose to do. Why pay for something terrible when you can get something good for free??

@pixelherodev We are still installing Windows 11. It has taken about 30 minutes so far.

@pixelherodev This is the only Windows 11 PC in the house. For that, I am thankful.

@codeHaiku because before 10 we had to pay for the os. Paying for software isn’t all that bad.

@jordan I am not against paying for software. I am disturbed that Microsoft, a multi-billion dollar company, puts out substandard products that are poorly engineered, track your every move, advertise to you, have security vulnerabilities, ship with a horrible file system, and require multiple reboots during a lengthy installation. This irks me to fork out the cash to pay for this type of product from Microsoft and their ilk.

@codeHaiku Today, in fact, on a gaming laptop that I bought specifically so I didn't have to have any MS products on any of my other machines, in the middle of a dungeon session of final fantasy 14 it seemed to deliberately crash the game client then immediately demanded that I update the BIOS and didn't give me a choice about it. This machine I've owned less than a week.

@sultmhoor Time for a product return. Windows was good: 4NT, 200X, XP and 7. That's it.

@codeHaiku if I could run everything I needed to in 2000 I absolutely would. The hardware vendors collude in this - I recently upgraded my video card since the prices have finally started coming down... and there was no driver for the card under the Windows 7 that I had installed on the machine (and that win7 install fucked around with my linux partitions CONSTANTLY... which finally just pushed me to get an isolated windows machine.)

@sultmhoor Isolated Windows machines are best. My go-to would be Server 2003.
