decided to do some napkin math for my story and it kind of made me have to rethink the whole thing lolthe long and short of it was if i wanted it to be an intersystem story that doesn’t have FTL (traveling with a rogue planet so i’d rather not do FTL), it would take 300 years to get from point a and point b which is… less than ideal lol. so now i’m just banging my head trying to make it feasible

@hex Immortality, cryogenic freezing, or wormholes are all good hard(-ish) sci-fi solutions to this.A wormhole network works by essentially bringing the locations closer together in space.

@urusan cryo is def allowable and immortality is not. wormhole MIGHT work now that i think about it…

@hex @urusan Cryo gives you a window where those transporting a planet would be vulnerable to attack. It's unlikely a crew would be at full capacity between systems, and going from popsicle to power armor is going to take a non-zero amount of time.It also adds to the loneliness of space; if it takes 600 years for a round trip, it's near certain that once you leave a planet, you'd never see anyone on it ever again.

@wheeljack @urusan yeah that’s actually part of the appeal - the story requires these folks to leave everything behind for this gig.

@hex @wheeljack Sounds like cryogenics would be perfect for your story then.

@hex @wheeljack One more random idea you might think about is that wormholes have issues with loops (which could cause time paradoxes or collapse), so perhaps in your setting they could be only one way (or even if two way is possible, the other direction is still under construction). From a narrative perspective, this is similar to cryogenics, except that they can't hop back on a return trip and they can still communicate (slowly) with home.

@hex @wheeljack One last variant is that fast communication can go through the wormhole, but a return journey is impossible. This is a bit of a stretch from a realism perspective, but maybe the massless nature of light makes a difference. This means the characters could still keep in touch with their old friends and family, but can't return to interact with them.

@wheeljack @urusan thanks for all the suggestions. just gotta figure out what works best for the world/themes i’m trying to build and square the circle on if it’s still the story i want to tell
