@usul @thefreecollective I don't use anything else anymore. It took some time to get my friends on it, but when I decided to delete all walled garden messengers like #WhatsApp, #Signal or #Telegram a lot of people who wanted to talk to me got #XMPP chat addresses. Let's try to make compliance with open internet standards a requirement for our communications.

@thefreecollective I tried and will give up #XMPP.– I only ever had one contact on XMPP.– There’s no usable messenger (with #OMEMO) for not-current MacOS. (For Android, #Blabber is good, though.)– My own ejabberd server keeps crashing, I never found the reason, and it won’t deliver the right certificate...– #Thunderbird supports #Matrix now.

@fiee if you want to try more I have some suggestions: 1. If not having contacts on XMPP is an onboarding issue: if your contacts use Android, I recommend #quicksyim by the #conversations developer. Has similar easy setup and contact discovery as Signal, but uses XMPP. Very nice user experience. #SnikketIM app and server allows you to send invites with an on boarding flow that guides your contact to download the app and create an account on your server. This solves the discovery issue partially in a privacy-respecting way.2. Do you know about Monal? By not-current, do you mean not up to date? An old version? 3. @fiee Never had an issue after installation. I'm not very experienced with servers and set it up in 2 hours. Snikket group chat was very helpful. You use docker, and it deals with Let's Encrypt certs for you. Hope this helps!

@thefreecollective Thank you for the effort, but no.– Monal supports MacOS from 10.15; I must stay on 10.14 (can’t afford new licenses for older software or even a new Mac)– One reason to use XMPP was to avoid “syncing” my address book, so Quicksy is the wrong approach.– As I wrote, Blabber (also a derivative of Conversations) is good.– I won’t spam my contacts with invitations to anything.

@thefreecollective – I guess Snikket wasn’t around when I installed ejabberd. Yes, most people run it without problems. My problem has to do with not wanting to use a subdomain, because I wanted my XMPP addresses to be the same as my email addresses. (While I am an experienced server admin, this setup is maybe a bit too advanced for me.)– I can’t use Docker on my virtual servers (provider says, double virtualization makes no sense).

@thefreecollective Had a quick look at Snikket – to me, it sounds too much like a closed network. They seem to try to establish Snikket as its own brand, even if it’s “compatible“ with XMPP.

@fiee No problem, too bad about the MacOS/Monal... I like to think of the invitation thing similar to dietary preferences. Say, if I prefer to eat plant-based (use XMPP) and someone invites me over for dinner, I can ask that they accommodate me (send them a Snikket invitation, with a short message explaining why I prefer this). If they will join- amazing, if not- I am left to explore alternatives. Am I willing to compromise of my values of decentralization and ownership?, if so I will use...

@fiee It's not a closed network at all. If fact the Snikket server is just Prosody server (made by the same devs) with a bunch of stuff preconfigured to make it easier to self host. Yes, they definitely do try to establish it as its own thing. I believe this is positive, to create a similar cross platform UX and appeal to most consumers these days who care more about a brand than a protocol...

@fiee From chatting with the developers in the #SnikketIM chat, I don't have concerns about this project moving away from the #xmpp community's values of open standards, data ownership, privacy, security, decentralization, and federation. (However with Matrix/Element, I do.)
