Today is a shitty day to be an American. The supreme court having overturned roe versus wade will turn the already raucous wail of human misery up to 11. What’s even worse is that in the blue states like mine nothing will change. It’s the poorer more conservative states where people will suffer at scale. And while I try not to get caught up in politics I cannot help but feel incredibly sad about this.

couldn't the people in those states work toward legislation that matches their desired state or move to somewhere more aligned with their ideals if they feel it's too much of an inconvenience?

@thatguyoverthere @feoh Or remember the sacred duty of jury nullification. The law can say whatever the morons in the legislature wants it to say; will any juries convict based on it?

This is true although is there any precedent for consistent nullification on any single issue? I imagine relying on that as an out if the law is against you is probably not the best longterm. I don't think this decision really seems to change much for most of the country in all reality. Some states will update their laws to be more restrictive, but most will probably not change anything.

@thatguyoverthere I don't really want to get drawn into an extensive debate on this topic because that way lies madness, but, respectfully, to answer your questions:1) In lots of cases, the people who are hurt the most by legislation like this are the poor. They can't AFFORD to move to a new state.2) Many of the people hurt by this are also utterly dis-enfranchised by their state. Go read up on voter dis-enfranchisement. It's incredibly disheartening.3) This isn't about 'inconvenience' - it's about actively choosing to keep impoverished people in poverty by denying them the support and health care they need. Abortion is just one tiny piece of the puzzle but an important one.

I appreciate the respectful reply. I am not trying to really debate whether or not abortion should be legal. I didn't mean that living in a state where abortion might be made illegal would be inconvenient. I was talking about if they didn't want to inconvenience themselves by involving themselves with politics. My point is simply that Roe v Wade was never the correct way to go about forcing states to allow abortion. There are correct paths available. I understand voter dis-enfranchisement. Most of that is because everyone is idiotically focusing on federal votes more than their local and state elections where their voice is more likely to be heard. I don't think voting is perfect at all, but this is the system we have. Having the Supreme Court legislate from the bench is not part of the system, and there are good reasons for that. I personally think less federal power is a good thing. States can decide, and I don't accept that people are trapped because they can't afford to move. It's much harder to move when you own property than when you rent. If that's still not a possibility local politics are also much easier to get involved in. We have much better chances effecting changes in our local policy than at the federal level.
