@Azure Ooh interesting! I can truly appreciate the desire to escape the bonds of the hand we were dealt by accident of birth. However I have some trouble with the dichotomy of both embracing my disability and thriving despite it and yet wishing I could cast it aside :)

@goz @Azure HA I don't know but that's EXACTLY what made me think of it! Guilty pleasure: I LOVE that movie! But only the director's cut - the theatrical release makes NO sense :)

@Azure It is interesting! Mental health is SUCH a complex creature because as you say it speaks both to your physical presence but also to what people in the past might have called your 'soul'. I agree for what it's worth. Not being able to drive here in the US is a life defining limitation. It's one of the ways in which I am and have been SO VERY lucky. I live in a major city where we at least have public transportation, but that doesn't stop me from hoping that ONE DAY self driving cars will be a thing and I get get in and say "Drive me to the beach!" :)

Today is a shitty day to be an American. The supreme court having overturned roe versus wade will turn the already raucous wail of human misery up to 11. What’s even worse is that in the blue states like mine nothing will change. It’s the poorer more conservative states where people will suffer at scale. And while I try not to get caught up in politics I cannot help but feel incredibly sad about this.

@thatguyoverthere I don't really want to get drawn into an extensive debate on this topic because that way lies madness, but, respectfully, to answer your questions:1) In lots of cases, the people who are hurt the most by legislation like this are the poor. They can't AFFORD to move to a new state.2) Many of the people hurt by this are also utterly dis-enfranchised by their state. Go read up on voter dis-enfranchisement. It's incredibly disheartening.3) This isn't about 'inconvenience' - it's about actively choosing to keep impoverished people in poverty by denying them the support and health care they need. Abortion is just one tiny piece of the puzzle but an important one.

@emacsen Actually thinking about it your choice of comparison to Lua is VERY apt and rather interesting. Lua is a simple language but one that can be incredibly expressive and powerful. So is BASIC, but we can't ignore the fact that Lua's designers had another 30 years of prior art to work from that BASIC's original creators did not :)In a sense, platforms like PICO-8 and TIC-80 are kind of what we're talking about here, even though they don't strictly speaking exist as hardware.

@veer66 @emacsen Atari LOGO was the first programming language to really truly blow my mind. Still amazed at the fact that I never ever saw anything like Dynaturtles in any other language and most don't know what I'm talking about when I mention them :)(You could change the turtle's shape and color and give them velocity & direction, as well as do collision detection between them and other turtles, pixels etc. It was awesome :)

@emacsen It's a valid question. I think the answer is: maybe? Like I said in a previous reply to someone else, part of BASIC's charm is its REPL. I guess you could easily create a REPL in Lua as well.So yeah, if you gave me a Lua REPL with direct hardware access to an architecture simple enough to fit in my brain, then I'd probably love it just as much if not more. Got such a thing lying around? :)

So, among my other disabilities I'm fine and gross motor impaired with difficulty crossing the midline. You WOULD NOT BELIEVE how hard a time people have understanding this. Provably false statements where I'm concerned:* Anyone can knit* Anyone can solder* Anyone can build a PCThe reason I bring this up is that we all have 'blind spots'. Areas where our circle of privilege makes us unable to see where someone else's reality may differ. I have tried to learn from seeing how this occurs in others to be more sensitive myself, and only succeed part of the time. How does one become aware of the boundaries of one's bubble? It's a super hard problem IMO :)

@piggo I do not, I've only ever bought them from state fairs and other venues for local food-craft.However, googling pickled eggs recipe produced many hits. I'd personally suggest "spicy pickled eggs" because my all time favorites were ones that were pickled with jalapeno and other delightful peppers :)Enjoy!

@veer66 There's a lot to be said for Java. I think folks kick it around unfairly sometimes. Sure, it's big and boiler-plate heavy, but if you need static typing, great perf for some usage patterns, and INCREDIBLE tooling it's hard to beat :)

It rather frustrates me that there are so many technical groups and organizations STILL in 2022 choosing Failbook as the platform they run their 'groups' or what we used to call forums on.Lately the Failbook AI, likely because someone has been trying to gain access to my account, that I am suspect. I have had posts blacklisted for using the terms "solder joint" (Minimalist Computing group) and "Leadbelly" (One of the forefathers of American blues, you should really give him a listen if you haven't!).In short, FUCK THEM and the horse they rode in on, and thank god for a platform where I can say that without fear of sanction. As I've said before and will say again, I really, REALLY appreciate this place and all of you who populate it!Hurrah for the #fediverse! May its freak flag forever wave :)

@lanodan @cwebber Yeah I'm not sure I buy the boolean argument either! (look forward to reading those blog posts!).What if as a for-instance you wanted to write the kernel or some piece of it in a very high level language like Python so you could simulate the way the data structures are modeled and how the various layers interact?
