Gee, i wonder why @NZNationalParty leader @chrisluxonmp would be against changes to political donation rules aimed at improving transparency!?! Just what are they hiding?#NationalNotFitToGovern#nzpolhttps://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2022/06/why-national-leader-christopher-luxon-is-against-changes-to-political-donation-rules-aimed-at-improving-transparency.html

@ryancrawcour This morning I listened to Guyon Espiner's interview with Luxon for RNZ. Very slick. We may have another Teflon John on our hands ;)#RNZ #GuyonEspiner #ChrisLuxon #NationalNZ

@strypey that's what political 'handlers' train their charges to do. Stay 'on-sound-bite', and avoid being drawn into revealing anything more... Very cynical. And yeah, Luxon is not the leader we need or want. He's more of the same warmed over rubbish we've been fed for the past decade+. Sadly, Labour's almost as bad. @ryancrawcour

@ryancrawcour @strypey sadly, among the political parties, the pickings are desperately slim. No party besides the Greens have an admirable principle between them. And, sadly, the Greens, despite having their hearts in the right place, aren't good enough at execution or communicating their message effectively. The political system seems to filter out most of the leaders we desperately need (there are a few possible exceptions, though quite junior).

@lightweight @strypey indeed. I am hoping thst Greens pull Labour more left this time round and keep them honest. We'll see.

@ryancrawcour @strypey yes, that's my hope, although given the broad lack of awareness (most people are still in denial about the approaching climate calamity) and appreciation of the Common Good I see in the NZ body politic, I'm not overly optimistic. We need a progressive government, and we need people to realise that conservatism is largely broken (like the status quo it seeks to preserve).

@lightweight @strypey agreed. Hope we never see a other conservative government again.

@ryancrawcour @strypey most stuff is pretty shit in the world right now - socially, environmentally, and economically - the trajectories are all downward. The 'halcyon days' for which many people pine weren't as good as they think (or, at least, not for many other people and ecosystems). Yes, we need to try new things, and rapidly respond to stuff that's working and to stuff that's not. We need a gov't *all* of whom have read (& grokked) Kim Stanley Robinson's The Ministry for the Future...

@lightweight > Stay 'on-sound-bite', and avoid being drawn into revealing anything more...That's standard political marketing, yes. But what I'm concerned with here is Snapper Key's ability to assert, quite convincingly, that he's worried about a thing, while defending policy that does it harm. @ryancrawcour

@lightweight An example of Luxon doing this is when he ruled out privatization of public assets and admitted that the Reaganite/ Thatcherite festish for Small Governments (ie more powerful states with less democratic participation or checks and balances) is counterproductive. Then later making arguments for tax cuts for the wealthy, and deregulation (keeping government out of the way of business, yada, yada). @ryancrawcour

@lightweight > most stuff is pretty shit in the world right now I sympathize with this view of the world, I've spent a lot of time stuck in that hole, particularly over the last couple of years. I heartily recommend reading more #GoodNews. See also my last couple of posts with links from the Positive News co-op magazine in the UK.@ryancrawcour
