So, if you connect your computer to the internet while installing Windows 10 that thing will force you to use a Microsoft account and not allow you to create a local user.

@ln Unless things changed Win10 should allow you to click a tiny blue text to skip the MS account but Windows 11 won't install without one whatsoever and essentially requires a internet connection while you install it. I think there are new workarounds all the time but Microsoft seems to patch them a lot

@gamey Before you arrive to the user creation part during the installation you are prompted to connect to a network. If you do connect to a network the option to go forth with a local account isn't available any more and you are required to either log in to your MS account or make a new one. Unless I really overlooked it

@ln It's intentionally very very very easy to overlook :)

@gamey @ln yeah, I’ve setup local users while online many times. It is easy to overlook. You also get lots of “are you sure you don’t want to sign in?” prompts.

@ln @kev @gamey they've actually removed the skip button in more recent versions... You have to NOT connect to the internet to be able to set up a local accountThat's on Home edition anyway, Pro edition still allows you to set up a local account via the "domain join instead" method.I don't know how they haven't got into trouble for this, it's absolutely horrendous behaviour

@paul @gamey @kev so I didn't overlook it? It was Home edition that I was installing.

@ln @gamey @kev I don't think so, unless I have been as well... but I'm pretty sure it disappeared around 2020-21I set up a lot of PCs for work and have been through that horrible setup too many times and seen its progression, it threw me a bit when that skip button wasn't there
