So yup, 1 entire month using nothing but my #RaspberryPi 4 as my desktop. And I plan on going on indefinitely! :D#minimalcomputing #oldcomputers

@kzimmermann I didn't do that since the raspi B model, I guess it has become a lot faster since those times :) I think netsurf was the only web browser that really worked on those old ones, that or lynx

@sotolf heh, I went with Puppy on my model B for a while, but yeah, it was painful… Dillo helped, though.Thankfully, though, the Pi 4 has a better CPU and can run Firefox acceptably. 8GB RAM helps too!

@sotolf but magically, even with all "production tools" I use, mine never goes over 3.3 GB usage! I think the rest of it is quite literally bding wasted!Dunno if I really should use the old computer tag after all!

@Tay0 ironically, the more I find (and thus 'save' from landfills), the more I hoard for myself, which isn't good for me either, so ideally, I'd donate them to a like-minded person or group that hopefully has more use to it than sheer experimentation.I'd love to find a charity willing to put any of this hardware to work, but don't know any. Which is sad, since at this rate, I'm probably just delaying the discarding :(@sotolf

@Tay0 hard to find a buyer for hardware this old or modest, I think. It's not old enough to be qualified as rare or antique. And the "profit" would be marginal@sotolf

@kzimmermann love that! How do you cool it? What is your overall setup? What's the power consumption compared to your previous setup per month or per day? I'd like to know so much more!

@metalune heh, I should make some time to write up my experience :) Here's the short answer:- I use a full-body aluminium heatsink case that manages to keep the temperature decently cooled, even when at full clock (1.5GHz). No need for fans... yet!- I connect it to an external monitor, keyboard and mouse. I started mouseless, console-only, then decided to go graphical.- Haven't measured the power of the Pi itself, but my electric bill hasn't been affected. So I guess it's OK!
