I have to give Apple credit on their processor. Seems like it's completely wasted on macOS though. Hopefully the M2 doesn't torpedo all the work the Asahi Linux Project has done.

@mike Asahi Linux knows exactly what they are going into. Building software against the vendor is a Pandora's box, and I can't help but feel that a lot of it is wasted effort.I say that as someone who RE'd drivers myself.

@mike M2's architecture is identical to M1's. Improved performance and core efficiency. Asahi Linux will run the same as now on M1, only faster. 🙂

@mike@fosstodon.org I hope so, too. Although I primarily use macOS, I’d like my next laptop to be useable for as long as possible. And the option to install Linux will ensure that’s the case.

@indieishere I suspected that, but didn't know for sure. So, it's basically like Google saying that Gmail is the most installed email client on Android. Not exactly a shocking revelation or statement about its quality.

@mike I don't bother to watch Apple events anymore, despite having been a massive fan in another lifetime. But catching up on the tech news I did see all the announcements and indeed the M2 looks very impressive. If I'm not mistaken something like 2x as fast as an i7..... Damn.
