Good threadWithout getting into it, I've spent my entire career automating aspects of my work (and that of others) and have spent a great deal of time analyzing the results with people in all sorts of leadership and decision-making positionsThe long and the short of it is that every step of automation removes *understanding of processes* from the participants who never engaged in those manual steps. This may be OK, and it may not. On an assembly line, for example, the automated processes are typically overseen by a person who has done that work manually - say, spot-welding - but the person next in line is just awaiting the completed component so that they can do their bit of workThis works for a time, but the cost savings disappear once you get to a place where nobody knows how the automated work is done or should be done, you have supervisors who haven't performed spot welding and they can only say it looks as good as it used to, or worse, or I can't do my work because X is wrongThis is even worse when people are handling data and have no knowledge of how to write a query, or how to make actionable inferences based upon data outputs, because they just take the info generated by a process and copy and paste it into a PowerPoint and present it with a smileYou end up with people who don't really have any knowledge, who can't identify problems in the output, or think about better ways to do the automated work, or why the lowest common denominator automation doesn't really work, and everyone ends up frustrated about the lack of quality and value resulting from the immense amount of work required to automate everythingThe burgers are cheap but taste like shit and are unhealthy. The executive has a few kickass bonus years and has to bail before their cost-cutting starts fucking up the business. Etc.RT: https://poa.st/objects/df7e4e9e-26b0-4d34-a12d-8f8c9e7d38c7

@KarlDahl I think there are many more variables than we think, at least in the wider society. What happens if the gov cracks down on whitey so hard that it become politically inconvenient to hire too many of them? What happens when you use up all your white quote in higher jobs that require them more? What if the guy on the ground level isn't a normal 2022 level worker, but a 67 iq african "refugee"? Wouldn't that change the calculus on automation a bit? If you can't even get functional humans to work for you, doesn't that make you more willing to put up with the drawbacks? I'm just trying to figure out how the gatest, most bureaucratic, ridiculous society could be. We see bits of it, but I bet it will get so much worse than we can imagine . If you're running the show and going automated - even with its many faults - would free you from a ton of problems, HR personnel, employee churn, and incompetence then wouldn't that bring it more within reach? Even if it were ridiculous to do, could you operate your business with a 17% cap on white personnel? You could have edicts from local gov. that caps it to the local population or something, just as a thought exer.

@IsraelDelendaEst @KarlDahl We get glimpses here and there. What's up with MPG requirements? Are they still pretending everyone can get 50mpg in the next 5 years? That level of disconnected HR spinster-brain is coming to be rolled out EVERYWHERE

@WashedOutGundamPilot @KarlDahl It's already happened decades ago. Abstractions upon abstractions to allow the various middlemen to simulate understanding, and they start thinking the abstraction layer below the one they're operating on is the thing itself, not realising it's turtles all the way down.

@KarlDahl @WashedOutGundamPilot the company I work at goes an Indian tech company to developer a new software for for us, cost 500 mill upfront and recruiting was supposed to be finished and in a fully working state within 2 years. It's been 5 years all of leadership has changed at least 3 times and everything is busted. We have entire sections of the business who are operating through emailing spreadsheets to each other now rather than using the now 1 billion $ software. An insurance company where the software developers had a test environment where they forgot about half of the insurance products and didn't even have a test environment for them.Fucking regards at the top be like "why are our customers leaving?" Basic information on the policies are wrong because y you hired Indians who speak like resumes but are actually brain dead

@dew_the_dew@KarlDahl @MechaSilvio @WashedOutGundamPilotCorporate penny pinchers can't think in the long term, only the next quarter. So they think that this guy in India will modernize your old VMS or Mainframe or as/400 software for cheap and save money except it's hobbled together js garbage that's less reliable and now the system is down again.Think of it like the McDonald's ice cream machines.

@WashedOutGundamPilot@poa.st @KarlDahl@poa.st This gets back to the whole reason for H1B fraud and Indian offshoring - managers HATE that their businesses live and die by the will of programmers. Even worse for them, in the absence of mass immigration fraud, those programmers are competent, highly paid, white, nerdy men who are not managers, which means the parts of the business the managers interact with every day have to hire a bunch of sheboons and rainbow hairs to rebalance their ESG scores. Managers love SaaS and prepackaged software they can have sysadmins and helldesk operate because it claws back some of the power from internal programmers. Even businesses that don't directly hire pajeets benefit from the wage suppression effect that poo(l) of labor provides.Software requires maintenance to be useful in the long term, and so that means if you're automating internal business processes, the only way to do it right is to hire, develop, and maintain a software development team... but managers don't like that.

@dew_the_dew @KarlDahl @MechaSilvio @WashedOutGundamPilot Well yeah, just look at Carly Fiorina. She's your typical old-school "free shit for businesses", anti-trump GOP ex-CEO. She's famous for the infamous HP Compaq merger that destroyed tons of jobs and became infamous for outsourcing hard. When she was fired, there are stories of people in HP partying. Yet they still paid her millions of dollars when she was forced out.

@KarlDahl @WashedOutGundamPilot I've seen that many times as well. To describe the process nightmares I've seen would take a freaking book (which is more your area, lol). But rest easy knowing that critical business functions in the DoD have been automated by people who didn't really understand the process for people who could never tell of it was right or wrong.
