Does anyone happen to have an opinion on vacuum cleaners? 😅 I could use some help deciding between a robot vacuum or a stick vacuum. Any pro's and cons I should be aware of? #help #fediverseRobot: https://www.bol.com/nl/nl/p/blaupunkt-bluebot-xboost-bpk-vcbb1xb-robotstofzuiger-met-dweilfunctie/9200000124566342/?bltgh=swkkdExPMkHFTtjdx5NKSA.2_6.7.ProductTitleStick: https://www.coolblue.nl/product/863072/samsung-jet-70-turbo.html

@Gina Robot Pros:* Does it for you on a schedule* Tracks what areas are doneRobot cons:* Can't do stairs, even small elevation changes* Requires an app usuallyStick pros:* Can get into all different kinds of places, including reaching the ceiling* Attachments allow for deep cleaning of various kinds of surfaces (carpet, hardwood, shag carpet, etc)* Can do your car with it too!Stick cons:* Gotta do it manually* Can't be 100% sure every place is complete

@Gina Robots are not that great for full cleaning. If you want it right, you need to to it yourself with the stick. Robot could be good for some daily cat hair stuff though.

@Gina all I got to contribute is that I like my stick vaccum cleaner. I got it under the assumption that a robot cleaner would have issues with the carpets, furniture, nooks & crannies, door thresholds, pets, etc that populate my floors.

@brandon @Gina Robot con:Poop smear.Seriously, if you have pets, consider what happens if they do a boo-boo on the carpet. The robot vacuum will almost certainly *not* notice it as an obstacle and will just gladly drive right through it. You can imagine what the end result is.

@Gina never used a robot vacuum before (we have mostly carpets) but we do have an upright vacuum and while my wife likes it, I preferred the old canister one. It was easier to maneuver and, as the person who does most of the vacuuming, you'd think I would have had more say in the matter! Here's sort of what we have now, and it is heavy and hard to move around:https://www.bestbuy.com/site/bissell-surfacesense-pet-multi-surface-vacuum-2817-black/6471388.p?skuId=6471388

@Gina I have both. The robot one I have doesn't require an app but it gets stuck a lot and doesn't really clean the entire area. The stick one is nice though. I'm in a constant struggle vs two cats who are trying to evenly distribute cat litter throughout the apartment.

@Gina We have two Roombas, one for each floor of the house. They've worked great for us and they can be scheduled to automatically go when you're not home or sleeping if you're a heavy sleeper. They're not super thorough though, and you're still going to want to do a more hands on cleaning with the regular vacuum on occasion. Also, if you have kids or pets that leave out toys or.... other things... that can be a problem for the automated cleaning solutions.

@Gina if you have light cleaning needs and no stairs a robot vacuum will probably work just fine as your primary (or only) vacuum. Otherwise, I'd say get an actual vacuum first and the robot as a convenience. Stick vacuums are fine for apartments or spot cleaning. Anything bigger and you'd be better to get a full stand up vacuum.

@Gina If you have an old standup already, that's probably fine. FYI, after about 2 years or so, the battery on the robot will likely die. Depends on the manufacturer, but you can often get some replacement parts for cheap online and just replace it rather than getting a whole new bot. Did that for our aging robot vacuum and it suddenly was back to almost new performance.

@Gina I had a robot vacuum and the most inconvenient part was having to empty it frequently (and do lots of bending down to do so), closely followed by having to keep ALL WIRES/CABLES off the floor. It was also quite loud? But it was fun. :D

@Gina based on experience of friends and coworkers, a robot doesnt replace a vacuum cleaner but is more like an addition.I would get a normal vacuum cleaner, honestly. Never regret that decision.

@Gina I recommend a robot to take care of 90% of the cleaning and to do it automatically on a schedule, plus a (cheaper than the one you linked) stick vacuum to hit the sort of corner spots that will inevitably get missed by the robot. Stick is also useful if you spill a bunch of stuff and need to clean up the area where you spilled it (of course a broom works here too)

@th @Gina Our robot vacuum totally warned us of a water leak in the attic, which would have been much worse if we had found it later. When it loses power it decides it’s not on its charger and goes looking for it, so we knew something was up when over breakfast it hopped off its charger and started wandering around the kitchen.

@Gina Robovacs are great, except — broadly speaking — they tend to not be very durable. In my experience, they start to break down in a year, maybe two if you're lucky and/or very careful with them. But for as long as they do last, they're awesome. We have a Roboroc S7, a combo vac-and-mop, which intelligently mops only floors, not carpets (which you'd think would be a standard feature, but it's pretty unusual).

@Gina never used a robot one, but vacuums seem to be one of those items where you get what you pay for. I've bought some cheaper ones trying to save a buck and they end up breaking or just not functioning well fairly quickly. For a vacume here in the US $250 -$300 is the cheapest I would go. And I know this has not helped whatsoever..lol

@me @Gina I have owned 11 of them over the past 14-15 years, including 7 or 8 different models across 3 different manufacturers. So, averaging that, each has lasted ~15 months, though I believe they are getting more durable over time ... some of my early bots didn't even come close to a full year.My current bot is named HAL11 ... I'm counting up to the HAL9000.

@Gina Well I think it's too late, and you bought your vacuum already, but anyway a couple of features to look for in a vacuum:- it should blow as well as suck, so you can inflate air mattresses and stuff (wish I knew that before I bought my vacuum, oh well)- my friend likes the one with the plastic bin instead of a dirt bag - he can just empty his bin and put it back instead of buying new bags all the time.
