If you go to an "estate sale", but nobody had kicked the bucket, were you deceived? To give a specific hypothetical example, somebody kept their good stuff, moved to their retirement home in Arizona, and the crap is sold off, labelled as an estate sale.

@Viking who cares as long you get the title and everything's in the books like it should be? ;)

I have an (unjustified?) assumption that an estate is an unmolested whole. How about if a storage place manager auctions off mystery storage units, but unknown to the bidders, he had gone through the units for anything valuable prior to the auction?

@VikingWhat you've described is a garage or moving sale.

@Viking I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that there may be certain items in someone's estate that adult children (or other heirs) may wish to have as mementoes or family heirlooms. (We have some cast iron skillets and some furniture that was from my grandmother's estate.)I don't think anyone necessarily has to die for it to be an estate sale, it's more that the entire estate (anything in the house/garage) is for sale.Storage manager situation is shady though.

@Viking Yes but it's more pleasant to buy vintage stuff from the living... if they are lightening up you can get history on items.Too many items come without stories. When I get stories, I write or type them up and put them on the back or bottom of the item. Just coz it is a cool thing to do, when possible.

@VikingYea, an estate sale should be after someone croakers, goods need to be liquidated to complete execution of a will. Items should include guns, precious metals, art, furniture, genuine silverware and cars.

@Viking It's a little petty, because I guess people can say what they want, but I agree with you. If someone is selling off an estate, it's an estate sale. If not, it's simply a yard sale.

It's an estate sale, it doesn't necessarily mean the person is dead. It's they're selling a house full of crap. Why do want to only buy dead people's stuff?@Viking

@Viking We did something similar when my mom moved from her home to a retirement community. I don't remember what we called it but I doubt we called it an estate sale. But she basically sold off everything that wouldn't fit into the new home. Two years ago she moved into the highest level care (part of a room) - basically everything else was divided up to the relatives, two trailer loads to the dump, and what was left went to charity.
