@cell on one hand copyleft is pretty autistic and if it were me i really would just rather say "yeah here do what you want with it it's cool!"on the other hand doing that lets big companies with shit morals, shit standards, and shit egos stomp all over anyone who wants to make things. if it were them, they'd say "No, you can't borrow my hammer unless you agree that your house is mine!"

@cell i thought about this, GPL seems very aggressive if one doesn't believe in copyright, because it forces you not only to do something with my work, but with your work that's built on it as well. On the other hand, it also seems very unwise to give other people your work while they will still use the force of the copyright system on you.I wish there were something like BSD + if you use my software you can never have any copyright claim against me. That is, if microsoft uses my software, i can pirate office as much as i want.

@cell Pretty bad way to put it since you can use GNU tools (but not librairies) to build things under whatever license, only exception might be C++ with GCC.

@cell The hammer comparison is a pretty big fallacy. It's more like if you invented a specific housing material (say leak-proof roofs or something), and you allow anyone to copy and use them for their own house, under the condition they also allow others to copy and reconstruct the roof however they want. Also if you use the roof as a base to create your own type of roof, you must list the materials and instructions on how to create that roof.Just using the roof doesn't mean you have to do this for every material in your house, but there are some people who try to build houses where every material is like this. (Debian etc.)

@kyuubi @cell The flipside is the copyleft model encourages corporations to plant their guys in the project at high levels to ensure their needs are met first vs just taking the code and modifying it as needed

@lain @cell GPL is a clever way to turn copyright based system against itself. Naturally it becomes very complex as consequence. As someone who favors abolition of copyright I see GPL as a very nice troll and a way to survive for devs who aren't tied to copyright landlords. Permissive licenses make projects easier to hijack so there were some license changes related to this. One example is wine project's conflict with cedega. Though only high profile projects would be subjects to such issues.

@helene @lain @cell true, but would be fucking hillarious for Microsoft to loose all rights to office, because one of their interns used my 10 line node js library as a dependencies dependecy,at which point i turn around and sublicese my perpetual all-power license to every single organism on earththen they get sued for violating exclusive-lisence deals they might have idk but from that description alone it seems impossible, you can't write a license that obligates someone to hand over their soul, zuckerberg would have tried
