Now that I think about it, have there been any shows that were supposed to come out as supplements to a bigger series, but ended up coming out first and having to just make shit up because the actual series didn't have anything to base it off of yet? The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Galaxy Angels.

@Ropshin as in there not being enough content to make an anime out of a manga\ranobe?i think those animes like naruto and one piece are like thatother than that, there was rozen maiden traumend which came out before the manga's continuation and basically made an alternate continuity

@Ropshin Rurouni Kenshin (the tv anime) is one example, Freezing is another, and so was the original Hellsing TV series. Sometimes the lack of any deep lore in the original works to the advantage of the anime - the Love Live and Aikatsu shows are examples of this.

@lina Nah, Galaxy Angels was supposed to be an anime companion to the game series, but the game got delayed while the anime was still obligated to enter production. So BROCCOLI let the studio do the equivalent of what the Ghost Stories dub treatment, except for practically the entire show right off the bat. I should have specified that I meant less so “The anime’s gone past the manga or made a few extra scenes to fill out airtime” and more so “The animation studio knows basically jack shit other than the design of some of the characters, part of their personality, and a shred of the plot/setting and have to come up with something out of it, no matter how outlandish”.The Rozen Maiden bit is neat, though.

@Ropshin yea, slayers did a similar thing but i think it was by design, so there's the anime continuity, the knight of the aqualord manga and the latest novels, it basically diverges after the hellmaster phibrizo arc and you end up picking which one you like most
