Kind of intrigued by the idea of taking a Linux distro that just runs Kodi on it as the main session, and flashing it onto a smart TV. Seems like something the open source community would be interested in doing, given how many TVs ship with an OS on them now.

Of course, you could probably just get away with hooking up a box to a TV, or throwing an Android app on an Android TV. That’s probably easier! But, the idea of completely flashing the OS so that you have complete control of the TV software sounds like something interesting and worth trying.

The closest thing I can find so far is custom AndroidTV development in the XDA forums. I’m really curious if there’s something similar to LineageOS, but specifically for SmartTVs running Android.

@sean It is surprisingly difficult to find a TV that is not "smart" (equipped with a garbage proprietary OS that will go unmaintained if 0 to 5 years from purchase). When I needed a replacement it took me weeks until I found a Sceptre 4k that was not only blisfully dumb but also had an RF input that I could hook my old Atari to! Apart from that you could get a "commercial signage display" at 2 to 3 times the price. Apparently smart TVs are built down to a cost (are garbage), plus are subsidized by surveillance capitalism.I think smart TVs are a solution to a problem that nobody had, and the vast majority of people rarely or never use the built in OS. I never would, so I went out of my way to get a dumb TV on principle.I still think @PINE64 could make a #PineTV where the smartscould be defined on your own terms and a decent number of people would buy one.

@msh @sean @PINE64 I suspect our next TV will be a large monitor. (I run MythTV, so that's all I need.)

@msh @sean @PINE64 it’s been a long time since I worked in the custom AV space, but commercial TVs used to come as dumb tvs not long ago, I would assume they still do. These are tvs sold to bars, restaurants , used for kiosks and so forth.

@msh @sean @PINE64 This lack of support also makes them massive security risks, with the potential to expose your home network.

@sean Kodi should run on Android. It's not the same as flashing a full image (that requires drivers and all kinds of extras). Alternatively LibreElec might be more portable: https://libreelec.tv/

@sean If/when this got to be A Thing, I'd be far less leery about having a smart TV. So far I've managed to avoid them.

@spaceportmarketwizard @msh @sean @PINE64 A smart secure privacy respecting "pine-tv" with applications you want running on it would be nice. This is something the present market refuses to provide. I suppose mythTV on a pi with a hdmi monitor could fill somewhat similar needs. Having a trustworthy and open generic smart tv platform means I could do things like put a phone app on it.

@tychosoft @spaceportmarketwizard @msh @sean @PINE64 you can already run librelec or something with plasma bigscreen on an sbc, and i think pine64 may already be overextending themselves and the community that develops on their hardware with the amount of devices they ship. however a media-optomized sbc and a case that fits multiple drives might be cheaper than the current offerings if they can sell enough, and the hype may push convergent toolkits to have better support for larger, further away screens and tv remotes as input.
