@twizzay Nothing to be sorry about 😅 it's actually not that bad at my base. It's just that, when comparing private industry to military, often the worst things you hear about civilian jobs are kind of standard practice here.

@artemis Hey, I'm involved with this project. Brands Town is a satirical ARG that involves a developing lore and lots of roleplaying. We're literally building a wiki and hypnospace-like websites for it.It started as a way to thumb our noses at brands on corporate social networks, and also to make corporatization of our shared space be that much less appealing for Brands to join. It's culture-jamming.A lot of people started impersonating real brands, and after getting several C&D letters from lawyers, I decided to create an in-universe reason to get rid of them. People were warned ahead of time, the best jokes were screenshotted, and those accounts got deleted. The AI is 100% fake and was just me mashing buttons. The AI is also a brand and a character in the lore.Anyway, it's all meant to be in good fun, you're 100% welcome to join in if you like. It's just a bunch of people, some of which work in marketing and social media, blowing off steam and doing weird creative stuff.

@artemis Even in the context of the joke, it was only ever implied that an AI company staffed, developed, and founded only by AI was providing a service to purge local accounts on the server. Nobody has the ability to do this kind of thing on other instances.The idea of haphazardly handing the controls of user management over to a grumpy AI ( @headless , one of my characters) , instead of carefully reviewing things by hand, was just me clowning on how inappropriately real companies are handling things like machine learning.I'm sorry if it made you uncomfortable. I mean that sincerely. But the truth of it is, this is all just metafiction to let some people goof around in a space that they've loved for years. It's just a vanilla Mastodon server run by a guy who's coding abilities never surpassed basic point and click adventure games.

@aalaap @moliver I'm going to be really cringey and say that a very-very young version of me used to download things to my desktop, and then upload them to the public_html/ directory using an FTP browser plugin for Firefox.The reason this is cringey, is that I would also update files locally for changes (theme CSS, configuration files, etc) and just re-upload it using FTP.I've come a long way. 😅

@libc Yeah, I've totally thought the same thing before. My hubris says "gee, it can't be *that* hard!", but it would be really cool to have something simple, straightforward, and uncluttered.The sad truth is that fucking around in a terminal just feels easier at this point. 15 years of a Linux desktop will do that to you.

@aalaap @moliver what's really wild at this point is that I can use a terminal app on my phone to do all of my server administration.I've literally used systemctl and journalctl to fix problems while waiting in a checkout line before.

I don't think I've ever gotten to a point where my instance has DB:Connection errors with Postgres before. Something is seriously messed up, and it's deeply worrying. I have to make a tough decision between starting over from scratch, or permanently moving to another instance.

Pleroma appears to have a serious issue with long-term operation. I'm not sure why. But it seems like, over the past week, things have become seriously unstable. Maybe the influx of new accounts made an impact. Maybe there were other underlying issues. I don't know. I'm just sad that I can't figure out how to fix whatever is wrong here.Being off of fedi for 3 days has given me serious withdrawal.
