Let me check.Me: Hey other guy, what's ABC acronym stand for?Other guy (been with the company 15+ years): Uhhhh <<this>> maybe? Or maybe <<other this>>?No one knows.

       @mike I think you could also more broadly apply this to roles, projects and most of corp organization taxonomy. Bullshit jobs and whatnot

       @mike@fosstodon.org we’ve actually setup a glossary at Automattic for these sorts of things that will give us a definition on hover for the first instance it appears in our internal documentation/communication.

       @mike@libertynode.net That's smart. We definitely should have done that.

       @mike Sounds like those that forget acronyms need some JIT OJT ASAP.

       @mike Yeah, we have like 25 different committees that all have some sort of acronym and those acronyms are all so similar that folks who are on multiple of these committees totally forget what is what.

       @mike I was at a company once that had a glossary of TLAs, and there was an acronym that had two different definitions.

       @mike English solved the <<other this>> problem centuries ago. It’s called <<that>>.#GrammarVigilante

       @mike I *am* at a company which has a scalable web app solely to serve a live-searchable glossary. Any pronounceable keyboard-mash of 3 to 5 letters is bound to return multiple exact hits.

       @ankitpati I considered <<that>>, but <<that>> also has some implied distance. You don't use it to describe something you're holding in your hand for example. It just didn't feel right in the moment. Ideally, I feel like both options would have been described as <<this>>, but that could cause confusion in a text based medium. Honestly, there doesn't feel like there's an option that works from all angles.

       @gidorah There's an acronym at my current company that's all over the place. It's used so much it feels like filler. When I started there I asked what the acronym meant, and you could just tell by the look on their face I was going to get an info dump. There's a department, a product, a data warehouse, other things that all use the same acronym. This company is terrible with them. The was literally a team at one point that was (and this is official) called MSHIT. Someone decided M SHIT was good.

       @mike That's pretty funny. Reminds me of the ill named joint venture between Nigerian Gas and Gazprom. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigaz
