Does anyone know of a VPS-provider that is not blocked by Microsoft, Gmail and similar?Vultr is hard blocked, and so is DigitalOcean.Well, if you are working for a provider, and/or is owning one - feel free to pitch them to me :)#askfediverse #askfedi

@selea How badly treated are ips from those vps-providers? Mails go to spam, or do not arrive at all?

@selea For e-mail purposes? All of them are.I tried Vultr, DigitalOcean, Hetzner, Gandi, AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, 5 hungarian ones. All VPS ranges were at least soft-blocked. Microsoft had most of them hard blocked, Gmail was more lenient: they only put everything into spam, and only rejected half my mail, whee!I ended up relaying through SMTP2Go, and no bounces or ending up in spam so far. Tried SendGrid too, but that didn't work out, despite hearing good things about them.

@selea I'm using mxrouting for my email. At the time they had a lifetime email hosting deal for a reasonable price and my isp blocked port 25 so it was a clear choice.I'm using my own domain and can create mail addresses at will, so it works well for me.

@selea I think Zoho mail and Fastmail are both still a thing.Beyond that you'd have to go old school and buy email services from your domain registrar or ISP.It's messed up that self-hosting email is broken because the main webmail providers automatically assume it's spam, even if it has the right SPF and DKIM stuff in place.

@selea I've been using OVH and emails do, mostly, seem to flow to MS/Google OKUsing Mailscanner/eFAI have done a lot of work with dnswl.org getting IPs and domains whitelisted etc. too.My main nuisance is UCEPROTECT Level 3 blocks - they blocklist huge ranges of provider IP addresses purely because that range (thousands of IPs) has a server that appears to be sending spam for a long period of time and the UCEPROTECT maintainers are pretty hardcore about it too.

@selea Good luck finding that. It's basically impossible if you don't own address space. If you do, you can sign-up your IPs for their JMRP (https://sendersupport.olc.protection.outlook.com/snds/JMRP.aspx?wa=wsignin1.0) and they will eventually allow emails from your IPs.

@selea @draxil Are you certain it’s an ip-block on the other email providers and not an outbound block at your VPS? I know Linode has a block in place so you have to contact them if you’d like to host a mail server. The block is default on new accounts. I wouldn’t be surprised if other VPS hosts have a similar practice.

@selea @gme @TrechNex I have created an account on Contabo in 2020 and, as I use unique emails for all services I subscribe to, I had to pass some manual validations with them, sending documents via email to prove I am who I am. At that time, I imagined this was related to people using their vps to malicious activities in the past, and now your story confirms my suspiscion. I have been using them since then and I can tell mailing works well on Contabo

@selea I switched to BisectHosting ~6 months ago and with of course a full DKIM/DMARC/SPF I haven't had an issue yet, and I communicate with mostly gmail accounts. The boxes are way bigger than what's needed for a small mail server so when I started I sent them the link to the XCP-ng iso and asked them to install that for me, which they did with no issue. So now it runs all my home server stuff minus media. Seems decent overall so far.

@selea no we are a hosting provider. just saying if nothing else works for you we could always sell you a VM which (afaik) isn't blocked

@selea the picture you sent is broken for me. our prices are variable, totally depends on how much power you need.

@knhy Ah! Understand,I checked the site via mobile, but on a bigger screen I think I understand what prometheus.systems is. I like what I read too.I am unable to see what the following specs would cost:1 vCPU1 GB RAM20 GB storage1 IPv4The possibility to set PTR OS: Debian 11

@selea @mrb Yep.. and with vultr, I wondered if maybe it's justified? It seems possible that spammers like renting cheap vultr instances to run their servers and that maybe vultr doesn't fight it as hard as they could? If that's the case I understand blocking their whole net, as offending IPs will probably change often with VPSs that you can rent hourly if you want..However it's totally possible that this is *not* the case and blacklisting them is 100% bullshit, IDK

@Doomed_Daniel Yeah I kinda understand why thou, but it still suck..I have been lucky to have had access to a very clean and reputable network for a couple of years, which allowed me to basically have complete control over what kind of BS is passing throu the many different public IP /24 nets. And since I have a wierd obsession with SMTP, and keeping stuff clean,,, yeah@mrb

@selea @mrb Yep, it sure sucks. And at least Microsoft's blacklisting is definitely total overreaching. I recently tried namecheaps "private email" service and even that got bounced by outlook.com. Supposedly that's fixed now, but it made me very pessimistic regarding self-hosting, if even a non-small commercial hoster gets blocked :-/

@Doomed_Daniel The only option left is basically getting your own /24 network..Or get a more expensive hoster lol@mrb

@aryak Yep, that will be because some random other person who happens to be on the same IP range as you (regardless of how similar your IPs actually are) has been spamming. Not your fault at all.The fact they see you as OK of L2 means they know it's not you, but you're affected regardless. UCEPROTECT's point of view is you need to speak to your provider who should shut down spammers servers to protect the rest of their clients.Oh, and of course you can pay recurring amounts of money to them to be exempt from L3 block, even though it's not you spamming in the first place and they know that.Ahhhh it drives me nuts

@selea Trilightzone was never blocked but it’s been several yrs since I used them. But I must say though, if a service blocks you from securing yourself then you should consider avoiding that service. Don’t trust them, and don’t feed them.

@selea I have many VPSs across diverse datacenters with MTAs and find GMail accepts mail from any that have PTR, DKIM, SPF and DMARC sorted. Outlook rejects randomly anyway, but will whitelist if you poke them repeatedly demanding explanation. They never give one, but will do it.
