we tend to think of "heaven" and "hell" as "good" and "evil"butthe truth, when it comes to you and other people, is thisif you make heaven for yourself, you make hell for othersand if you make hell for yourself, you make heaven for othersbut if you're in heaven, you do nothing for othersand if you're in hell, you do everything for others

@thor this is a very odd zero sum way of viewing human happiness, which I don't thinknis supported by ... anything, really.

@nielsa it isn't supported by anything.nothing supports it.but where did we come from? nothing.where do you go? to nothingness.so nothing supports everything.

@nielsa ignore the syntax and take in the concepts of "nothing" and "everything" and how they are opposite.but then think about how stuff tends to work. if you give, someone takes. if it's bright somewhere, it's dark somewhere else. if it's good here, it's bad somewhere else. if it goes in, it has to come out. if it goes up, it has to come down. it goes one way? then it has to go another.if you want stuff to sit still, to have peace, do that. sit still.if you want some chaos, go create it.

@nielsa something which does not move is still. no one notices it. they'll consider it insignificant. people generally only care about things that move.i move, but just a little.if you don't care about something at all, it has zero value to you.but zero value is not hate, nor love. it's just neutral.

@thor but this isn't how things tend to work, at all. When I work with someone on someghing worthwhile we're both left better for it. When I extend empathy to someone we're both left more human.

@nielsa this is true. it depends on how detached you are from the outcomes.

@thor detaching yourself from the outcomes of your actions is bad, actually. Like a form of self-dehumanizing.

@nielsa so, if attaching yourself completely to your actions is human and completely detaching yourself from every action, including what might harm you or othersthen what does it look like to sit in the middle of that?to me, this seems to be what humans do on average. a bit of both.

@thor I'm not sure I understand what "attaching yourself completely" to an action means. This feels like some weird exercise in words, rather than engaging with what I said?Deliberately making yourself unaffected by the consequences reduces your level of connectedness with other people, which is necessary to function as a person. If you do things that are harmful to yourself, you should probably stop, rather than detach yourself from them?

@nielsa @thor I don’t think detachment means to stop caring about something but it would mean to be the observer of your thoughts & feelings instead of allowing them to dictate you on a whim. That’s my understanding of it so correct me if I’m wrong. And of course, both perspectives can coexist as not everything is either this or that.

@julilyinfinite @nielsa well, some people might *think* you're emotionless if you act sensibly despite feelings telling you the same.

@julilyinfinite Ignoring your feelings or putting them aside isn't what I'm reading in @thor's posts. We are talking about detaching oneself from the consequences of one's actions. You are flipping it by talking about how actions are informed by emotional state. It's not the same.

@nielsa @julilyinfinite fundamentally, momentary emotions are key. but go only by that and you're a slave to the moment.
