@thor that's true! And realizing that we have a need for other people is in itself pretty radical.Like, we live in a world that is structured to atomize people and make them feel like strangers to each other, where they would be natural friends or acquaintances. We are taught to compete instead of collaborate.Realizing that these are external pressures we can push back on is really fucking powerful!

@thor I feel like this is another classic adhd experience tho: babbling about whatever is hyperfocused on is atypical and hence seen as weird and crazy, you know?I for one love my hyperfocusing or special interest friends... but it has taken some time to find a group of people I can have that kibd of community with.

@thor I hope you find it, you place to go ashore! I don't know if there are any, like, volunteering or other community things nearby that you can kinda just show up to? Doing something with people is a great way to get to know them 😊

@thor I think a lot of people find value in strong identities exactly because they've been denied just being themselves, or have even had their personhood denied. It's a very privileged position to get to just be.

@thor this is a very odd zero sum way of viewing human happiness, which I don't thinknis supported by ... anything, really.

@thor but this isn't how things tend to work, at all. When I work with someone on someghing worthwhile we're both left better for it. When I extend empathy to someone we're both left more human.

@thor detaching yourself from the outcomes of your actions is bad, actually. Like a form of self-dehumanizing.

@thor I'm not sure I understand what "attaching yourself completely" to an action means. This feels like some weird exercise in words, rather than engaging with what I said?Deliberately making yourself unaffected by the consequences reduces your level of connectedness with other people, which is necessary to function as a person. If you do things that are harmful to yourself, you should probably stop, rather than detach yourself from them?

@julilyinfinite Ignoring your feelings or putting them aside isn't what I'm reading in @thor's posts. We are talking about detaching oneself from the consequences of one's actions. You are flipping it by talking about how actions are informed by emotional state. It's not the same.

@simon Very cool! I think you're right that we'll see all sorts of new innovation start to take place in this space, this does feel like a significant inflection point

Incredibly important point from Adam Conover's A.I. is B.S.: the AI ethicists are being fired because they pointvout the real dangers of it, which are related to overestimating e.g. the capabilities of large language models and placing too much trust in it.@adamconover 's vid here: https://youtu.be/ro130m-f_yk#ai #chatgpt #GPT4 #gpt3 #machinelearning

My take: a load of people stake their businesses on exactly this hype from misunderstanding. That's why tech folks are calling for a moratorium on AI dev: it makes it seem more dangerous! And more powerful! And closer to superintelligence!Messaging that happens to make their businesses more valuable, and distracts from actual dangers that may otherwise be regulated.Note also e.g. when Sam Altman (from OpenAI) says regulation is needed he frames it wrt dangers of superintelligence etc#ai

In his video @adamconover cites a paper by @timnitGebru (and others), who I'd strongly recommend following for deep understanding and good insights on this whole mess.#ai #aiethics

Oh shit I posted this too early. My take overlaps 1-to-1 with one of @adamconover 's points in the last part of his video — posted too soon 🙃

While @adamconover 's video isn't at all times completely technically accurate, none of the popular media takes on AI are - and his overall point is much closer to the reality of what's currently going on than all those media sources jumping on the hype train and parroting OpenAI's PR.

@mike @downey @jens @aral @fosstodon Are you just deliberately not going to engage on the actual subject of whether it was a reasonable suspension, Mike?As an outsider that sure says a lot to me.
