Mastodon 3.5 supports editing of posts. I wonder how edited posts will look on other fediverse platforms?https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2022/03/mastodon-3.5/#fediverse #Mastodon #EditPosts

I can see the benefits of people being able to edit their posts for typos etc but the potential for abuse is obvious. @Gargron and co have thought of this ...> The original and previous versions of the posts are saved and remain accessible through a history view. And people who have previously shared the post get notified about any edits, so they can un-share if there’s foul play.... but all this creates a burden of auditing work that will be carried disproportionately by responsible users.

Alternatively (as in diaspora protocol), do not allow any edits of posts (distributed ledger style)

@strypey I'd argue that misuse of edit feature be its own reporting category.I've long wanted the feature. It's vulnerable to abuse, yes, but I've leaned increasingly to addressing abuse rather than methods of abuse, at least where the methods themselves have significant reasonable use cases.Time-limiting edits (say, within a 4h or 24h window) might be an option. (I have been known to edit posts years later on some platforms, e.g., Reddit). Given Mastodon tends to "live in the present", that harm is ... somewhat abridged.Though the cyle of post -> garner responses -> edit -> make media hay over responses to the now-edited post .... could prove problematic. Mass media lacks nuance, and the situation could quite possibly be exploited.(The more so as it's not necessary to edit until after the desired target has replied.)Meantime, I still post / delete / repost quite frequently A post-preview ... would be handy.Since the present workflow is edit -> post -> formatted / final content disappears and has to be specifically called up ... errors tend to both appear and not be quickly corrected. Which is annoying as heck.@Gargron

@strypey @Gargron @thor's fork of Glitch-soc had this first, I think>this creates a burden of auditing work that will be carried disproportionately by responsible usersso? responsible people already carry a disproportionate burden of work, of their own free will

@Hyolobrika @strypey @Gargron i think what Hyolobrika is getting to here is that ultimately, somebody's going to have to be responsible. it's more responsible to correct a mistake than to not pay attention to updates.

@strypey I don't think it's that much of a burden, since in general you should not be boosting random content from completely unknown/untrusted users. And for people who do that I can't say I mind having a feature that discourages it.

@strypeyO ffs. Edits are not worth the hassle they bring to short form social media.No-one is really that bothered by your typos but you.
