everyone has the same problems, just that some people choose to engage with the problems and others are forced to engage with the problems.

example: everyone in northern latitudes needs to heat their home:- some choose to spend money and be incredibly wasteful.- others are forced to wear warm clothes and burn wood. We all live on a spectrum between extremes. BUT many don't realize they are living on an extreme at all.

"this is normal, everyone burns natural gas shipped via (leaky) pipes all over the world into a home with bad insulation and drafts, its fine" this is the norm for many people but it's actually an extreme. The only way you get more extreme is like sleeping next to plutonium.

if you want to be efficient, you make the choice. I think we should make the defaults better but until then we need to realize the choices we make, even if we didn't make them in the first place.

buying a boat and burning wood is actually not that extreme when you think about it in this context. The boat can move to warmer places, it has lots of thermal mass, likely you already dress warmly.

@peregrine We often end up in conversation where people are like "wow, this is extreme and dangerous", and we're like "no, living in a house and driving a car is the extreme and dangerous thing", "No! the boat is more extreme-"
